Something to bear in mind is that the rules of spelling rarely apply in family history research. Rather, how a word, place or name SOUNDS is vastly more important.
Keep in mind accents, handwriting, varying education levels and even hearing difficulties; they could have affected how a word is spelled in the record where you find it.
So when you're looking for a placename or name in an index, where presumably many eyes and hands processed information about your ancestor, be creative about how you spell it in your search.
