Q: Where can I find a list of townlands in County Clare?
A: Go to www.clarelibrary.ie, click on GENEALOGY, scroll down and look to the right for RESEARCH SUPPORT. Click on TOWNLAND INDEX. The spellings are based on the 1901 Census.
Q: What if I don't know exactly how to spell it? Some of the placenames in transcriptions are pretty far out there.
A: Try www.seanruad.com for help with any placename in Ireland. This site allows you to search all townlands beginning with, say, Bally- or ending in -glin or -glan, etc. Pay attention to the drop-down menus provided to steer your search in the right direction.
Q: What if I want to try to find/contact a family living today in the townland from where my ancestor originated? How do I do that?
A: Go to www.goldenpages.ie, click on www.eircomphonebook.ie found at the top of the page, and search there. You can either ring them up or write them a letter.
