Pat Purcell Papers. (a true transcription).

1818.

The Information of Richard Byrne of the Town of Carlow, Yeoman, taken before John Bennett, Esquire, one of his Majesty's Justices of the Peace for Carlow.

Richard Byrne being duly sworn on the Holy Evangelists deposeth and Saith that he is employed by Mr Edward Farrell the Tenant to the Customs of Carlow to collect the Customs and in case any person should refuse to pay the usual Custom upon Goods and Merchandize sold in the Town of Carlow he was directed and authorized by Edward Farrell to seize part of the Goods so sold and liable to Customs and the same to detain in satisfaction of the said Custom ~~

And Richard Byrne saith that on Monday the seventh day of December 1819 Patrick Clowry brought into the Market of Carlow, Five Tubs of Butter and then and there sold the same ~~ and thereupon Richard Byrne required Clowry to pay him, on behalf of Edward Farrell, the usual Custom viz one penny for each Tub so sold ~~ and Clowry having refused to pay, Richard Byrne thereupon agreeable to his instructions seized one Tub of Butter as a distress for satisfaction of the said Custom ~~ and Richard Byrne further saith that thereupon Patrick Clowry seized Richard Byrne by the Neck and shook him several times and threw him again the wall and then rescued the said Tub of Butter from Richard Byrne by force ~.

Barony Constables.

8th day of May 1818.

William Shepard Copnagh, Carlow swears before William Carter that Robert Shepard, late of Tobinstown, Carlow , has left for America and left William with the Lands and Dwelling House at Tobinstown and Knocknigan and movable property consisting of a quantity of Potatoes, Pigs, Timber and other articles. William requests of Magistrate William Carter that he provide protection by the Barony Constables to assist him as he believes that "his life is in danger as John Moore of Paulville, Gentleman, well armed and in a most menacing and threatening manner, has removed upwards of twenty barrels of Potatoes, a door and door case torn out of the Dwelling House and a Gate taken off the Hinges" and is claiming the remainder.

Robert Ivers, Tullow Street, Carlow, Shopkeeper.

IVERS Has a neatly finished and most convenient NEW HOUSE in Tullow Street, next door to Mr. John Warren's, with extensive rear Concerns, and a House with Gate-Entrance in Bridewell Lane. They will be Set together or separately. The House is desirably situated for any kind of Business, and decidedly one of the best standing in Carlow.

Carlow Morning Post, 1818.

Wexford Assizes.

Thomas Call of Mucklow, and Thomas Call of Tomcoyle, were indicted for the murder at Little Limerick, of Nicholas Fanning and Edward Lennon, steward and labourer in the employment of Rev. Dr. Quinn. The prisoners were both young men, the eldest not more that twenty years of age. They were found guilty and sentenced to be hanged on Monday, and their bodies to be given to the Surgeon for dissection.
