Transcript of a Diary, 1846-1912

This journal was kept by Timothy O'Flaherty, Castlegregory, County Kerry, Ireland. It also contains additional entries, 1909-1915, made by his son. A copy of the journal was donated to the Family History Library by Peter Lenahan, 25 Sylvan Ave., Tuckahoe, NY. It was microfilmed 26 July, 1990, and labeled XLIB8P-102 1559408 #146 - Catalogued: British 921.415, No. 5.

Diary

April 12, 1909. - My father Timothy O'Flaherty who kept this book and entered events with dates up to then died.

March 17, 1846. - John Maurice Fitzgerald of Ballyduff murdered by one Cournane, a servant of his.

Nov. 1846. - Ship "Hebe" bound for Limerick with a general cargo wrecked at Leary's Island. Crew saved by climbing ashore on a rope.

Dec. 24, 1847. - Sloop "Industry" with a cargo of flour and meal for Tralee came ashore at Scarth, Kilshannig. Tom Scanlon and Maurice McElligott went to America to evade giving information.

Nov. 18, 1850. - "Errichata" (?) of Naples wrecked at the West side of Kilshannig, a little North of the church. One of the sailors drowned and buried outside west gable of the church. Captain's name Massarina (?) Ruggers (?).

August 24, 1857. -
"Lexington Kennebund" (?) a large American barque loaded with oak staves and cotton wool wrecked beneath Killiney on Brandon Strand. Captain's name - Dickman. Hull afterwards sold to a Liverpool merchant named McCarthy, towed out by a steam tug, but the ship on her way to Liverpool snapped the cable by which the steamer towed her overturned (??) and went down with two men from Fenit who were aboard.

Patrick Hussey of Castlegregory killed by a bale of cotton that fell from the ship.

Dec 24, 1857 - French schooner "Vigilante" wrecked about the same place as the Lexington - on Brandon Strand. Afterwards sold to Mr. Graham (?) Tralee.

Dec 25, 1859 - John, son of Robin O'Donnell of Cutteen drowned a Carrlogha beach bringing a drifting deal ashore.

Feb 2, 1861. - Self married Hanora Deen, daughter of John Deen of Fahamore. Michael Shea of Fahamore married Mary Daly of Clooseguire on same day.

March 25, 1861 - Thomas, brother of John Deen died suddenly.

Nov 19, 1861. - My first child, John O'Flaherty born, lived only four days.

Feb 20, 1862. - John Goodwin and wife Mary Deen with three children left for Australia.

July 2, 1862 - My father, Morgan Flaherty died at Castlegregory aged 74 years.

Sept 24, 1862. - Ellen Lynch, wife of John Hugh O'Flaherty and daughter of John Lynch of Castlegregory died.

Nov 1, 1862. - John Flaherty, above referred to, left for Australia.

January 13, 1863. - My daughter, Ellen O'Flaherty, born.

Feb 7, 1863. - John O'Donnell of Dingle, husband of Mary John Lynch of Castlegregory, died of consumption.

March 17, 1864 (?). - John Murphy of Tullaree and Patrick Shea, Warren both drowned at Aughacasla strand.

April 27, 1863 (?). - My brother, Daniel O'Flaherty left for America.

October 24, 1865 (?). - My grandmother Margaret Fitzgerald (alias O'Flaherty) died.

March 19, 1864. - My aunt Margaret (Peg) O'Flaherty mother of Charles Daly died.

April 16, 1864. - Mary Harrington (Mrs Hussey of Garrywiliam), left for America.

April 23, 1864. - Cappaclough races.

Nov 4, 1864. - Kate Sullivan, mother of Owen Courtney of Stradbally died.

1864. - Fever raging throughout the country this year.

Mar 31, 1865. - Maurice Harrington, husband of Norry Hennessy left for America.

April 15, 1865 - Ned Scanlon, father of John and Jerry (?) Scanlon of Maherabeg, died.

April 18, 1865 - Mrs John Gallivan (Nell Flynn) of Castlegregory died.

April 21, 1865 - My son Thomas O'Flaherty, born.

May 18, 1865 - Miss Bridget Fitzgerald of Ballyduff died.

May 21, 1865 - Mrs Michael Shea of Fahamore (Mary Daly) died.

July 11, 1865 - John Hugh O'Flaherty (Shawn Eigh = Aodh ?) of Castlegregory died.

June 1, 1866 - Parson Brunskill, rector of Killiney died.

June 26, 1866 - Mrs Timothy Flaherty (Kate Corkery) of Drum died.

July 28, 1866 - Catherine McCarthy of Loughbeg married Michael Griffin, chief boatman of coastguards.

Oct 27, 1866 - Michael Connor Drum killed by a fall from his horse.

Nov 8, 1866 - Mrs John Kenny of Cutteen died.

March 13, 1867 - Paddy Connor (tailor) Candeeha died.

Nov 28, 1867 - Mrs John Egan (Ellen Fitzgerald) of Tullig, died.

Dec 4, 1867 - Michael Murphy of Ballyguin and Mr. Morrison chief boatman of coastguards killed at Connor Hill by the upsetting of their cart.

January 24, 1868 - Lord Ventry buried; died Jan 21

March 3, 1868 - Thomas and Bridget Deen left for Australia.

March 13, 1868 - Bridget James (?) Spillane of Fahamore died.

March 27, 1868 - Thomas Maurice Spillane died after his return from America.

1868 - Mrs John Flaherty, uncle John's wife of Drum died.

Dec 20, 1868 - Tom Kenny of Candeeha died.

Feb 28, 1869 - Great storm and high tide on preceding night. Garrywilliam passage cut away. Several heavy losses sustained in other parts from the effects of floods and tides.

March 17, 1869 - Uncle John of Drum died aged 86 years.

March 24, 1869 - Mary William Bowler of Fahamore died.

March 28, 1869 - My son, Daniel O'Flaherty born.

April 5, 1869 - Martin Kelliher of Garrywilliam left for America.

May 6, 1869 - Porpoises to the number of 108 killed on the shore of Brandon Bay.

June 27, 1869 - Johanna O'Donnell of Glenteenassig (Mrs John McCarthy of Fenit) died.

July 7, 1869 - Mrs McCarthy (Jude Reidy) mother in law of Ned Connor died.

July 7, 1869 - Sailor suffering from periodical fits of insanity, and who gave no other name than that of Nicholas visited Maharees and remained there approximately 11-12 months.

Dec 19, 1869 - John Moriarty, Shawn Bawn, of Garrywilliam died.

Jan 29, 1870 - Catherine O'Donnell, daughter of Robin O'Donnell, of Cutteen died of consumption.

Feb 2, 1870 - Ship "Martha" of New Brunswick laden with fish and oil wrecked at Corrlougha. Captain's name - James (?) Downey.

March 10, 1870 - Thomas Sylvey Egan of Castlegregory died.

March 10, 1870 - Patrick Donahue, son of William Donohue of Fahamore died.

May 16, 1870 - Michael Fitzgerald, father of James Fitzgerald of Garrywilliam died.

May 24, 1870 - Robin O'Donnell of Cutteen died.

June 18, 1970 - Timothy Spillane of Fahamore, husband of Mary Cournane died.

July 29, 1870 - John Myles Daly of Clooseguire died.

Sept 6, 1870 - Brig, "Alpine Crag", sank at Leary's Island. All hands saved.

Sept 7, 1870 - Thomas McCarthy of Loughbeg died.

Dec 11, 1870 - Susanna Swindell of Tullaree, Mrs Malachi, drowned at Tullaree strand.

Feb 18, 1871 - Thomas Cournane of Cutteen married Bridget Murphy of Fahamore. On same day James Murphy, brother of Bridget married Catherine Cournane, sister of Thomas Cournane above mentioned.

Feb 25, 1871 - My son, John O'Flaherty born. Godfather -James O'Connor, Castlegregory, Godmother - Mary O'Connor wife of above.

March 4, 1871 - John Flaherty of Duagh, son in law of Dick Moore of Castlegrgory died.

March 9, 1871 - Ellen Moore, daughter of above Dick and wife of Dan Cournane of Kail, died.

March 15, 1971- Sloop, Eliza of Limerick with a cargo of potatoes from Ennis for Berehaven wrecked at Fermoyle Strand. Crew consisting of three hands drowned, but their bodies were recovered the following day.

June 19, 1871 - Michael Brosnahan father of T. Brosnahan of Castlegregory died.

Sept 21, 1871 - Mrs Daniel Shea (Mary Rohan) of Tralee died.

Nov 23, 1871 - Mrs Michael Egan (Mary Fitz) of Castlegregory died.

Nov 27, 1871 - Thomas Spillane, father of Maurice and James Spillane of Castlegregory died.

May 9, 1972 - Mary Maurice Spillane of Fahamore died.

May 19, 1872 - My mother, Johanna Flaherty (Fitzgerald) died.

July 15, 1872 - Mrs O'Kane mother of Father O'Kane of Loughbeg died at a very old age.

March 23, 1873 - Greek vessel "Maria" laden with Indian corn grounded at Mucklaghbeg and became a wreck.

July 6, 1873 - John Ryle, son of Widow Ryle of Kilshannig died.

October 6, 1873 - Denis Rohan (??) of Fahamore died.

October 24, 1873 - Mrs Charles Daly of Clooseguire died.

June 5, 1874 - Rev. J. O'Kane PP Castlegregory died. Appointed PP Castlegregory on the death of Rev. Thomas Healy in July 1846. Father Healy became PP of Castlegregory in the year 1829, having been preceded by the Revd. Maurice Moriarty (Black Priest).

October 22, 1874 - Julia Finn, Mrs Thomas Fitzgerald of Martramane and sister of Dr. Finn died.

October 24, 1874 - Mrs Daniel Shea (Margaret Lynch) of Fahamore, died.

December 5, 1874 - Ship "Highland Maid" with a cargo of oil, wrecked beneath Stradbally on the shores of Brandon Bay.

March 17, 1875 - Maurice Browne of Kilshannig died.

March 28, 1875 - Mrs Patrick Rohan (Catherine Frank Fitzgerald), of Goulane died.

March 29, 1875 - Michael Ash of Kilshannig died.

April 22, 1875 - Got married to Ellen Lynch of Gurrane in the parish church of (Bally) Ferriter. Celebrant Father Egan.

June 23, 1875 - Michael Tom Kenny of Kilshannig, died.

November 12, 1875 - Michael Lynch of Gurrane died.

February 17, 1876 - Patrick Hennessy, who for years acted as herdsman for the tenants of Fahamore and caretaker of wrecks for Mr. Hickson, died.

February 29, 1876 - Patrick, son of John Deen of Fahamore, left for Australia.

November 4, 1878 - Robert Conway Hickson Esq., of Fermoyle died.

November 18, 1878 - Maurice W. Fitzgerald of Garrywilliam died.

February 25, 1879 - Mrs Patrick Moriarty (Mary Kenny) of Garrywilliam drowned in a pool of water at Cean Carrriga.

February 27, 1886 - Moonlighters visited Maharees. Took a gun from Patrick Burke junior and two guns from the island.

March 17, 1886 - Patrick Griffin of Castlegregory died aged 90 years.

May 3, 1886 - Anthony Donoghue shoemaker died, during life celebrated for joviality, lived at Castlegregory.

January 5, 1887 - Land-league hut built for Thomas Cournane after his eviction the previous May. Hut built in John Connor's field at Candeeha.

April 7, 1887 - Mrs Patrick Cournane (Margaret Spillane of Cutteen) died.

May 19, 1887 - Con Hoar of Castlegregory, tailor, died.

February 28, 1888 - Mary Hussey, Mrs. Robin O'Donnell of Cutteen, died.

March 5, 1888 - Rev. Malachi Scannell CC Castlegregory died suddenly.

March 29, 1888 - Denis Cournane of Cutteen died.

April 26, 1889 - Brother John O'Flaherty died in Ansonia, Connecticut, USA.

May 16, 1889 - John, son of Michael Bowler of Fahamore, died.

May 23, 1889 - Maurice Moore, after having returned home retired from the army, drowned while fishing on a rock on the North side of Maharees.

October 8, 1889 - Mrs Hugh Flaherty (Nora Tom) of Castlegregory died.

October 19, 1890 - My son, Morgan Flaherty, ordained by Bishop Coffey at the Cathedral Killarney. Aged 23 years, 6 months, 11 days. Born 8th April 1867.

October 22, 1890 - Nicholas Fitzgerald of Garrywilliam died.

October 29, 1890 - John Lynch (Shawn Bawn) of Castlegregory died aged 85 years.

November 24, 1890 - Barque "Charger" of Belfast laden with deal (29,000) wrecked on the beach at Corrlogha.

December 25, 1890 - John Moriarty (Shawn Peg) of Fahamore died.

June 23, 1891 - John Scanlon of Magherabeg died.

November 2, 1891 - Aunt Jude died.

November 19, 1891 - Bridget Shea (Donnelly) died.

December 29, 1891 - Schooner "Catherine Richards" ran for shelter into Brandon Bay, slipped her anchor the following day and drifted to sea. Crossed between Garrywilliam point and Illaunimill on December 31st. On nearing Garrywilliam point the crew launched a boat which was immediately swamped by the waves. Captain Forbes's body was washed ashore at Knockane Clough on New Year's Day. Four other bodies were recovered about the same place on the day following . The sixth body was cast ashore on the 3rd January 1892 near the same place. This was a boy of about 22 years.

August 10, 1893 - Mrs James Kenny of Kilshannig (Mary Sullivan) died.

August 25, 1893 - Mr Keating, engineer arrived in here today, to plan new pier at Scraggane.

September 21, 1893 - Congested (Districts) Board Steamer, "Fingal" came to Scraggane at 8am this morning. Mr Greene landed to inspect the place.

October 21, 1893 - Edward Flaherty of Drum died today.

October 29, 1893 - Thomas Daniel Shea of Tralee, formerly of Fahamore died this day.

November 12, 1893 - John Daniel Sullivan of Maherabeg died today.

December 11, 1893 - Gobbariask races commenced today, very severe weather.

January 13, 1894 - Mrs Thomas Murphy of Fahamore died.

January 20, 1894 - Barque "Pory Yarrock" driven in a disabled state by stress of weather into Brandon Bay today. Crew of 20 men on. Cargo of copper valued at about £100,000 -
January 28, 1894 - Barque "Port Yarrock" drifted from her anchorage and became a total wreck beneath Kilcummin. All hands lost.

January 31, 1894 - Steamer in distress off the Islands, blowing "foghorn" - ran for Kilrush. American liner with passengers.

February 7, 1894 - Michael Farrell of Castlegregory died today. Age 62 years.

February 8, 1894 - John G. Connor of Candeeha, died today.

February 12, 1894 - Mrs John Dean (Mary Spillane) of Goulane died today.

February 12, 1894 - One of the crew of the "Port Yarrock" came ashore today.

March 16, 1894 - Maggie Flaherty, Mrs John Moriarty, died today.

April 15, 1894 - John Sullivan of Candeeha died this day.

April 15, 1894 - Julia Dean, Mrs Reidy of Castleisland, died today.

April 19, 1894 - Mrs Tom Knightley (Nora Moriarty) burned nearly to death this day. Survived for about 6 hours after being burned.

April 24, 1894 - Three Brandon boats were sunk by a heavy storm this day. No lives lost.

December 1, 1894 - Francis Goodwin purchased the Scraggane field from John Dean.

December 14, 1894 - Dr. Busteed of Castlegregory died today aged 79 years.
