Toll Road Timeline
1729 Setting up of the
Turnpike Trusts under legislation by George II.
1731 The Turnpike Act of George II was passed.
It enabled the making of a toll road from Kilcullen via Carlow to
Kilkenny. In the same year the toll road from Kilcullen to Kilkenny
was separated into two parts from Kilcullen-Carlow and
Carlow-Kilkenny.
1751 Enabling Turnpike Act of George II for a
toll road from Athy to Leighlinbridge.
1808 Carlow-Castlecomer (new) enabled by an
Act George III
1812 Carlow-Kilkenny-Clonmel enabled by an Act
George III
1819 Road opened between Athy and Castlecomer.
1829 Act 10 of George IV authorises the making
of a road from Dublin through Blessington and Baltinglass to a point
near the town of Carlow.
1831 New turnpike road between Baltinglass and
Carlow authorised to open.
1856 Inquiry by a special Royal Commission
into Toll roads.
1857 Turnpikes Abolition Act.
