Trawlers ________________________________________________________________________ The Admiralty Historical Section has information relating to the loss of WWl trawlers, in the class: War of 1914-1918: Admiralty Historical Section: Packs and Misc Records, ADM137. Admiralty Historical Section records in ADM 137 are at the Public Record Office, Kew, England. Not filmed, sorry. The website http://www.pro.gov.uk has a series of on-line leaflets which may be of use. These records are extremely valuable for the researcher. If you have to employ an independent researcher, it will take them approximately 5 minutes to find out whether or not records exist but they may have a minimum charge rate. They will not be able to tell what is contained in the records, only that records do or do not exist. You would be well advised to choose a PRO accredited researcher as these are not run of the mill documents. You are unlikely to find anyone prepared to do a 'freebie' in these records. The main cost however is in the photocopying. If records exist, they tend to be copious! You need to clarify in advance with your chosen researcher, exactly how much you are prepared to pay for copies. Equally you should expect your researcher to advise you on the number of valuable sheets contained in the file to ensure you don't miss valuable information. I have seen records where the number of copies runs into several hundred and you need to be very specific about this before contracting with anyone! The RNR (Royal Naval Reserve) employed trawlers in wartime and before WWl formed the RNR (T) ... Royal Naval Reserve, Trawlers. The RNR(T) employed fishermen to crew the trawlers, not necessarily drawn from those who were serving on the trawler in peacetime.
