PROTESTANTS MASSACRED IN THE DIOCESE OF FERNS 1798

A list of some of the protestants massacred in the Diocese of Ferns and County
of Wexford, including the Parish or Townsland where they resided and were
killed, with an account of the atrocities. The surviving sufferers made
applications to the Commissioners appointed by Parliament for part of the fund
appropriated for their relief, and their loss was substantiated by their own
affidavit and that of the Parish Minister, and was certified by their Landlord
and by a neighbouring Magistrate. Date seems to be 1798.

mistake by a Hessian, while standing at his door.

offices, and property, were consumed by the rebels, who 
murdered his two brothers, two brothers-in- law, and one

Baubier John of Finshoge, near Enniscorthy, killed 28th May, 
3 small motherless children left.

murdered at New Ross.

Callister Margaret, pursued and wounded at Enniscorthy by 
rebels, 29th May, and killed unknowingly by the King’s 
Troops, 21st June.

Campbell James, and son, murdered on Vinegar Hill, widow and 
four more children left.

Cane Mary of Clone, her husband murdered.

Carden, Lieut., of the Scarawalsh yeoman infantry, killed 
the 28th May 1798, in defence of Enniscorthy.

Carlisle, James, Labourer. All from Tintern and all died in 
the fire at Scullabogue.*

and 7 children left.

murdered at Wexford.

Daly Sarah, wife of a yeoman, forced to Scullabogue and 
burned in the barn, of St. Mary’s. Her sons William and 
James, burned with their mother, the eldest 17, the other 
14.

Daly Thomas, of Enniscorthy, Miller and Yeoman, two sons 
burned at Scullabogue, one aged 12, the other aged 14.

Daniel, William, Surveyor, murdered on the Bridge of 
Wexford, 20th June 1798, left a widow and seven children in 
the utmost distress.

Horneck George, of Girrane, two sons killed, one between 
Wexford and Enniscorthy, the other shot at Enniscorthy, 30th 
May. His son-in-law George Cooper was also murdered, his 
house burned and property destroyed, Parish of Killane. His 
brother Phillip murdered on Vinegar Hill.

Howlan-Darcy, Edward, Esq., 27th May, of Clough.

Howse, Rev. George, Rector of the Union of Inch, in the 
Diocese of Dublin and County of Wexford, was obliged to fly 
from his house to save his life, which the rebels plundered 
to the amount of £400. His wife, three sons and three 
daughters, fled without any clothes but what they had on 
their backs.

of Killnehew.

Hunter, Lucy, swore her husband, William Hunter, was 
murdered same time, and her house and property destroyed at 
Enniscorthy.

from the Parish of Donamore.

the County, with a large family, and deprived of 
subsistence.

Mowles Rebecca, of Craneful or Cranesul, husband murdered 
29th May, in flying from Enniscorthy to Ross, two children 
left, Parish of Clone.

Vinegar Hill, 30th May, of St. Mary’s.

murdered by some of the rebellious banditti that infested

Thomas Margaret, her husband murdered at Enniscorthy, 28th 
May, Sexton to the Church in Ferns. Four children left.

Thornton William, Coachmaker in Wexford, in endeavouring to 
make his escape to Waterford, taken near Taghmon, and 
murdered.

Thornton, Thomas, Coachmaker of Taghmon, murdered in the 
beginning of the Rebellion.

Three Gentlemen, Bartholomew Cliffe, Richard Elliot, and 
Richard Annesley, murdered at the Roar, of Ross.

Parish.

Tracy Anne, swore her son was killed by the rebels, who was 
her only support, she is a widow with 7 children, of Mothel

Trimbly James, burned in the barn at Scullabogue, of St. 
John’s.

Troke, Rev. Thomas, Curate, murdered on Vinegar Hill, on the 
1st of June, his widow in a state of derangement, two of 
their children died.

Tugman, Margaret, swore, her husband, William Tugman, a 
weaver of Enniscorthy, was killed by the rebels, and left 8 
children.

Turner Rev. Francis, Rector of Edermine, murdered in his own 
house, of Edermine.

Turner, Edward, Esq. a Magistrate, murdered at the bridge of 
Wexford, 20th June. 1798.

Turner, Susanna, swore that her husband, Samuel Tyrner, a 
school master at Taghmon, was shot at Scullabogue.

Turpin Joseph, murdered by the rebels in cold blood, at 
Foulksmills, on the 5th June, left four orphan children, of 
Horetown.

Tweedy, Frances, swore that her husband was burned at 
Scullabogue.

Two brothers of the name of Bateman, compelled by their 
Landlord, John Hay, to join the rebels, were killed by the 
King’s troops, on their return from Vinegar-Hill.

Two others named Meany, a father and a son, were also 
murdered at a little distance in the County Kilkenny, of 
Ross.

Vero Anne, of Verona, her husband, Charles Vero, Esq., a 
Magistrate, murdered at Enniscorthy, of Rossdroit.

W. Richardstown, Parish Clerk, F. Smith, Parish Clerk, R. 
Thackaberry, Farmer, W. Rudd, Farmer, T. Crofts, farmer, J. 
Crofts, his brother, J. Crofts, his nephew, all killed in 
Enniscorthy, the day of the first engagement, 28th May and 
all from Edermine.

Walker Hannah, of Killinahue, near Gorey, her husband 
murdered on Whitsunday, and she fled and left her property, 
two children.
