CLONMINES

The Borough of Clonmines is  a Corporation by prescription, 
and returned two members to the Irish Parliament until the 
Union. There is no evidence of their ever having received a 
Charter.

INQUISITION AT WEXFORD 12TH ? 1624.

1. 1624. William HALE, Esq., of the Hill and Hayesland was 
found seised of 3 acres in Clonmines, held from Cheevers of 
Macetown, as of his Manor at Ballyhaly.

2. 1627. Richard BROWNE, of Ouldhall, found by Inquisition  
held at New Ross, March 28th 1627, to have died seised on 
the 31st July, 1617, of among other lands, ½ burgage in 
Clonmines, held of Cheevers, of Ballyhaly.

3. 1633. John BARRY found seised (new Ross, April 9th 1633) 
of 15 acres and 4 gardens in Clonmines, but from whom or how 
the Inquisitors are ignorant.

4. 1634. John CULLIN found seised (New Ross, April 14th) 
among other lands, of 16 messuages and 180 acres with a 
windmill belonging thereto Clonmines. The premises are held 
of Christopher Cheevers by the annual rent of 31s. 8d. 
Sterling.

5. 1634. Phillip HORE, Esq. late of Growtown, found seised 
(New Ross, April 1634) among other lands of one waste house 
and one garden in Clonmines.

6. 1635. Phillip DEVEREUX, esq. found seised (New Ross) Oct. 
20th 1635) of among others, lands in Clonmines and Redmond’s 
lands containing 70 acres.

7. 1637. Patrick BROWNE, late of Malrankan, Defunct, was 
found seised (New Ross, April 14th) of one Burgage in 
Clonmines held in Burgage terms.

8. 1640. Inquisition on the death of William SUTTON, esq., 
of Ballykerogemore, finds that he held among other lands in 
the same County, 60 acres in Clonmines, held of Christopher 
CHEEVERS, for the rent of 12/4 and are now worth 116/.

9. 1640. John BARRY, late of Barristowne, defunct, was found 
seised (Wexford, August 17th ) of 15 acres and 4 gardens in 
Clonmines, held of the King in capite by military service, 
viz, the 20th part of a knight’s fee.

10. 1640. Christopher CHEEVERS, esq., of Mastone, County 
Meath, was found seised of £5  burgage rents from the town 
and lands of Clonmines, and certain gardens within and 
without the town containing 5 acres held of the King in 
Burgage terms.
