WORKERS ON THE LYONS ESTATE, MULLINGAR PARISH,  WESTMEATH IN 1820.

This is a list of 53 workers on the estate of JOHN LYONS of Ladestown House in
the Civil Parish of Mullingar, Co. Westmeath in 1820. The list is extracted from
a wages book in the National Library of Ireland (NLI Ms. 4248). Some of the
workers are only listed by surname, and two entries are Ronans and Adams
which suggests two or more family members, perhaps brothers.  The estate owner,
John Lyons, was an interesting man who wrote an early manual on the cultivation
of tropical orchids. He also built his own printing press (which is now in the
County Library in Mullingar) and grew his orchids in a glasshouse that was
heated and watered by a system he invented.  Some further information on the
