MURDER OF JAMES POWER OF GURTEEN, 1781

Waterford, Nov 27.
Last Wednesday was committed to the county jail, by John
POWER, of Carrick, esq; Patrick WHELAN, of Ballynerake, in
the county Tipperarary, charged on oath with having, in
company with a number of ruffians, assembled between the
hours of ten and eleven o'clock on the night of Sunday the
18th inst. at the house of James POWER of Gurteen, in the
county Waterford; (an honest inoffensive man) and having, by
many imprecations and menaces, compelled him to open the
door; they then swore his house, and everything therein,
should be consumed to ashes, unless he would give them a
saddle; on the poor old man's declaring to them that there
was no such thing in the house, Whelan immediately
discharged a gun loaded with ball at him, by which he
received a mortal wound, and in about an hour ___ he
expired. William POWER, of Ballydine, (?) and John POWER, of
Carrick, esqrs. apprehended this offender a day or two after
this shocking murder was committed. source: Library of
