Hunt __________________________________ TEMPLEDERRY CHURCHYARD pg 405 [Kindly contributed by Miss Otway-Ruthven, 1901] *The first four of the following inscriptions are on flat slabs lying side by side in a railed-in enclosure':— Here lieth the body of Mrs ELIZABETH OTWAY Widow of the late COOKE OTWAY who departed this life August 17th 1807. in the 60th year of her age. ____ Here are interred the remains of COOKE OTWAY Esq of Castle Otway who died December 5th 1800 aged 72 Pleasing in his manners Sincere in his attach- ments. Patriotic without interest and pious without ostentation. He lived in enmity only with the Foes of his Country. He died resigned to God and in charity with mankind. TIPPERARY. 406 Here lieth the body of Colonel THOMAS OTWAY who departed this life on Tuesday July 4th 1786 Aged 56 years. ____ Here lie the remains of Mrs FRANCES JUDGE alias OTWAY who departed this life the 12th day of August 1797 aged 69 years Also the remains of her husband SAMUEL JUDGE Esq of Ballyshail in the King's County who departed this life the 15th day of March 1813 aged 77 years. Here are interred the Remains of the Revd EDMUND JORDAN 38 years Rector and Vicar of the Parish of Templederry who died the 5th day of March 1822 aged 73 years Also of FRANCES his Relict who died the 6th day of Dec. 1833 Aged 76 years ____ 'In the Church the following inscriptions are on mural tablets':— Here Lyeth ye Body of Col HENRY OTWAY who Departed this Life on Wednesday ye 19th of Janry 1736 Aged 37 years. ____ Sacred to the memory of COOKE OTWAY Esq. Captain of the Castle Otway Yeomanry Cavalry who departed this life December 5th 1800 Aged 72 From trouble freed rests here to death resigned A friend to's King his Country Humankind Whose Soul intrepid bravely dar'd engage Against Rebellion Faction Party Rage Till spent with Labours and worn down with years The Hero dropped and claims each Patriot's tears He lived respected and he died beloved By merit honoured and by worth approved Farewell brave Soul in thee thy friends have lost Their Country's Bulwark and their Country's Boast. 407 TIPPERARY To the memory of the Honble SOPHIA OTWAY CAVE of Castle Otway in this County relict of the Honble ROBERT OTWAY CAVE, M.P. and eldest daughter of Sir FRANCIS BURDETT Bart. M.P. Obiit Decr 30th 1849 Erected by Captain robert JOCELYN OTWAY R.N. of Castle Otway Sacred to the memory of THOMAS OTWAY Esq. of Castle Otway and Lissen Hall At the latter residence he breathed his last On the 26th day of June 1786 in the 56th year of his age Sincerely regretted by his equals (superiors he had none) And followed to the tomb by thousands of the labouring poor with tears and lamentations. This tablet is raised to his memory by his nephew LOFTUS WILLIAM OTWAY in grateful remembrance of his unremitting kindness and tender affection continued to him until his death and also of the benefits of his generous attachment which have survived his brief but well spent life. ____ Sacred to the Memory of the Honorable MARTHA PRIME Wife of the Honorable FRANCIS PRITTIE And daughter of COOKE OTWAY of Castle Otway Esq. who departed this life a few days after the birth of her first child on the 10th of April 1802 In the 23rd year of her age And who was interred in the Church of Kilboy If fairest innocence ingenuous truth Engaging manners and the bloom of youth If beauty feeling modesty and worth If every virtue torn at once from earth Can claim the pitying tear Oh! let it fall on lovely MARTHA'S bier Yet let this thought her weeping friends console That to her God ascends her spotless Soul This monument was erected to her beloved memory By her affectionate Brothers Admiral WALLER OTWAY The Revd JOCELYN OTWAY & Colonel Sir LOFTUS OTWAY SOURCE: Journal of the Association for the Preservation of the Memorials of the Dead in Ireland.
