GLANKEEN PARISH CHURCH, NEAR BORRISOLEIGH
'The following inscriptions on tombstones in Glankeen
Church yard, near Borrisoleigh, County Tipperary, were
copied by Miss Cooke, of FortWilliam, for me, J. Grene
Barry' ---- All in roman capitals.
1. "Here lieth the body of Anne Cooke Wife of John Cooke of
Borrisoleigh who Departed this life the 4th day of October
1759 Aged 30 years."
2. "Here lies the body of William Cooke of Borrisoleigh Who
departed this life, 8th December 1777 Aged 29 years. Also
the body of Margaret Ryan alias Cooke Wife to William Ryan
of Thurles."
3. "Beneath this monument, together With the ashes of his
parents, John Cooke late of Rathmoyne and Anne Cooke
otherwise Carey his wife, peacefully repose the remains of
Richard Cooke. He was born at Ballyduff in this Parish.
The 6 of December 1756. Married the 7 of February 1780.
Mary daughter of Jeremiah Lalor of Barnacrotty in the Co.
Tipperary and Susan Lalor otherwise Delacroh His wife and
died 19 February 1822. At his residence in the neighbouring
Village of Borrisoleigh. Here also repose the remains of
His wife Mary Cooke Alias Lalor dep. this life on the 25
March 1835 in the 76 year of her Age. May she rest in
Peace."
4. "Gloria in Excel. Deo. Here lies the body of Nicholas
Biddulph who Dep. this life Sept. the 6th 1799 Aged 62
years. Lord Have Mercy on his Soul, Amen. Here also lieth
the mortal remains of Mrs. Hannah Biddulph otherwise Cooke
his wife having attained Her 81st year in the full enjoyment
Of all her faculties with pious Resignation and in humble
confidence of a happy Eternity through The Merits of her
Redeemer She Departed this life the 20th of August 1824"
5. "Sacred to the Memory of Catherine Wife of Lieut.
McCulloch and their infant son. She died in the 26th year
of her age 23rd of July 1820."
6. "May the Lord have mercy on The soul of William Cooke
Esquire of Liss who departed this life April 24th 1825 in
the 43rd year Of his age. And of Margaret his Wife who
expired July 30th 1858 Aged 71 years, Also of Richard Their
eldest son Who died September 11th 1868 Aged 57."
7. "Oh Holy Cross beneath thy shadow I will rest. Erected
in loving memory of John William Cooke Esquire of Fort
William and Liss near Borrisoleigh. J.P., Barrister at Law
Who departed this life on the 31st March, 1877. Aged 58
years By his fond and sorrowing Widow. Of your charity Pray
for his soul. R.I.P. "Here lieth the remains Of John George.
The Infant Son of John William Cooke and Elizabeth Cooke
who died 14th January 1860 Aged 10 months. "Here lie the
remains of John The beloved son of John William Cooke And
Elizabeth Cooke Who died 23rd March, 1866 Aged 6 years."
8. "Of your charity Pray for The Soul of Elizabeth Eleanor
Wife of, John Wm. Cooke of Fort William Who died Sept 10th
1881 Aged 58 years May she rest In peace. "Blessed be the
dead which die in the Lord (Resurgam) Joseph Poulter Mackesy
AM.MB. Trin : Col : Dublin. Fellow of the Royal College of
Surgeons in Ireland. Erected by his fellow citizens, his
relatives, & friends as a tribute to the memory of a
Christian Physician, and much distinguished for professional
acquirements as for his many Virtues. Obiit April 3rd 1866
aged 50 years." "In affectionate Remembrance of Thomas Lewis
Mackesy M.D., F.R.C.S.I., who departed this life 8th April
1869 aged 80 years. Ps. xxxix."
