James joined the Qld Police in 1889 and station at various far western Police stations. He was promoted to Constable First Class & became Officer in charge of Arrilalah Station in 1901. Arilalah is approx 50 kms west of Longreach, far west Queensland. James eventually died at Arrilalah 21/04/1903 after contracting Typhoid from contaminated water while on horseback patrol. My sister and I had the plaque made and then laid when the Arrilalah cemetery was rededicated in 2006. Additional Comments: James was born in Scregg, Co Roscommon to John and Bridget (nee McDermott) Leyden. John was a farmer. He and Bridget died 1909 & 1904 in Carrick on Shannon. Their buriel places are unknown. The last two of the children, Joseph and Annie remained in Ireland. Joseph married Mary Jane Beirne & Annie married Owen Lavin. Joseph & Mary Janes' as well as their son Michaels grave is located at the Drumlion cemetery, Co Roscommon. All images Copyright by Photographer
