He was in the Royal Irish Constabulary before coming to Australia in 1857. He was in the Victorian Polce Force before becoming a warder at Pentridge Gaol and then Ballarat where he remained until he retired. He died in Ballarat in 1918. He married Catherine Donnelly in 1860 in Melbourne.
