1881 SLATER'S DIRECTORY - ASKEATON 

Askeaton
Is a parish, petty sessions town, and police station, in the 
barony of Lower Connello, county of Limerick, about 65 miles 
N.W. from Cork, and 16 W.S.W. from Limerick, pleasantly 
situated near the Shannon, on the influx of the river Deel. 
It is famous for its castle, built by one of the earls of 
Desmond, and for its abbey, which is considered one of the 
most beautiful and perfect in Ireland. The parish church and 
the Roman Catholic church are the places of worship. There 
are two schools, one under the National system and a parish 
school. Messrs. J.N. Russell & Sons have a large flour mill 
here, and there is a station on the Foynes section of the 
Waterford and Limerick railway. Population of the parish in 
1861, 2,736 and in 1871, 2,112, and the town 1,353.

POST OFFICE, Askeaton, Thomas Casey, Post Master. - Letters 
from Limerick, Dublin, London &c. arrive at five and eight 
morning, and from Tralee and places south at half- past 
seven morning, and are dispatched in Tralee and places south 
at five morning, and to Limerick, Dublin, London, and 
Scotland, at half-past seven morning and half-past seven 
evening.
