OBITUARY: HIGGINS, MICHAEL FEBRUARY 28, 1895

Red Oak, Iowa, 1895
His obituary, (paper unknown) stated: "Death of Michael
Higgins. Michael Higgins, for 23 years a respected citizen
of West Township, died at his home there Feb 28 from
pneumonia. Mr. Higgins was born in Co. Leitrim Ireland in
1833; and came to the United States in 1858. He lived in New
York City two years (see 1860 Census?), then moved to Ohio
where he stayed one year, then returned to New York. In 1862
he moved to Illinois, living in Rock Island County 11 years,
and from there he came to Iowa and to Montgomery Co. in
1872. He had resided since that time on the farm he first
purchased in West township. Mr Higgins was married in
December 1877 to Miss Catherine Ward in Hamburg, IA.  Four
children where born to them, three of whom, two sons and a
daughter, are living, the oldest son dying in 1887. Mr.
Higgins was a member of the Catholic Church. He was esteemed
and respected by all who knew him. His family is left in
good circumstances. The funeral was from St Mary's Church in
Red Oak, last Saturday morning. There was a large
attendance."

Additional Comments: Michael Higgins was born in about 1832
in Inishmagrath parish, County Leitrim to John Higgins and
Catherine Flynn.
