OBITUARY: HOGAN NEE RYAN?, MARGARET JULY 5, 1888

Yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock Mrs. Margaret
Hogan, aged eighty-five years, died at the residence
of her daughter, at No. 112 north 7th street, from
senile debility. Mrs. Hogan was born in the town of
Kilkenny, Ireland, in the month of June, 1803, and
emigrated to this country when quite young, and has
been a witness to the last seventy years. Intellectually
she was strong and possessed of a remarkable
memory. She delighted in conversation and it
afforded her much pleasure to recount her
experiences of sixty years ago, among which was
riding on the first railroad train, on which was General
Jackson, with whom she shook hands. She emigrated
from the east nearly fifty years ago, locating here
when the population of this city was only five
hundred. she came in a stage coach, over the
mountains, in which was General Harrison, or "old
Tippecanoe," and became quite well acquainted with
him. She has been a widow since 1849. Her funeral
will take place at 9 o'clock to-morrow morning from
St. Mary's church, and friends of the family are
invited. Interment at Earlham cemetery.
