CEMETERIES: ST MARY'S TOMBSTONES, CALLAN

(Transcriptions made in August 2005 by Callan Heritage
Society members Jimmy Hoyne, Rita O'Neill, Philip
Lynch, Luke Murphy, and Joe Kennedy. Typed and
rechecked by Joe Kennedy in February 2006).

1. (Broken cross). In loving memory of Lily the beloved
wife of Stanislaus Haslam R.I.C. who died at Callan 24th
January 1903 aged 37 yrs.

2. Erected by Michael Hayden in memory of his mother
Mary Hayden alias Meany who died 20th October 1869
aged 79 yrs.

3. (Celtic cross). Erected by William Keogh, Bridge Street,
Callan in memory of his father John Keogh who died
23rd Feb 1899 aged 50 yrs. His mother Anne, nee Lynch
died19th March 1917 aged 75 years. The above William
Keogh died 3rd Feb 1945 aged 67 yrs. His wife Mary
Keogh nee Walsh died 13th may 1964 and two
grandchildren. (Side of stone) Also his grandparents
Michael and Margaret Keogh, and his brother Michael
who died 13th March 1958. Nancy Keogh died 21st Aug
2002 aged 84 yrs.

4. In loving memory of Margaret Kenny nee O'Shea, 6
Mellowes Park who died 9th Dec 1986 aged 84 yrs.

5. In loving memory of Mary (Molly) O'Shea, 8 Mellowes
Park, Callan who died 16th Nov. 1980 aged 72 yrs. Her
husband Danny O'Shea who died 13th June 1986 aged
92 yrs. Also his parents Bridget and Michael.

6. In loving memory of Catherine Shelly nee Sinnott,
Mellowes Park, Callan who died 10th Aug 1952. Also her
parents and sisters who are interred here. R.I.P. Erected
by her loving daughter Molly

7. (Decorated cross). Erected by Patrick Morrissey, Callan
in memory of his son James Morrissey who died 22nd
May 1869 aged 20 yrs.

8. In memory of Catherine Roche, Green Street, Callan
who died 10th Dec 1966. Her daughter Mary Kate Burke
died 20th April 1990 aged 73 yrs. Her granddaughters
Patty and Maureen interred in London and the Isle of
Man. Erected by her loving children.

9. (Iron cross). No inscription. (According to a local as
recorded by KAS this is the grave of the Clifford family
from Callan. One boy drowned in a quarry. Anty Clifford
made sugar stick and 'peggy's leg')

10. (Sunburst with decorations) Erected by the widow
Mary Smith, alias Harrison of Callan, as a token of love
to Patrick Smith her affectionate husband who died the
13th of February 1832 aged 52 yrs. Also her daughter
Fanny Smith who died July the 26th, 1833 aged 18 yrs.

11. Merciful Lord Jesus grant eternal rest and peace to
the souls of John Marnell, Callan who died 13th Jan
1882, his wife Kate who died 13th May 1879, their son
Michael died 4th Jan 1937, his wife Mary died 18th July
1917. John died 28th Nov 1920. His wife Margaret died
11th March 1949. Also Margaret died 13th Oct 1984.
Her brother John died 2nd Jan 1985, and their sister
Mary Kate died 11th Feb 1999 aged 101 years. Erected
to replace old tombstone by Michael Marnell R.I.P.

12. In loving memory of Catherine Walsh, West Street,
Callan who died 18th Dec 1938. Her husband John Walsh
died 12th Oct 1946. R.I.P. Erected by their son Michael
and daughter Mary Lenehan, New York City. 13. In loving
memory of John Power, Haggardsgreen, Callan 1839 -
1918. His wife Bridget, nee Moore 1844 - 1924. Their
son Jack died 1959. (Jackie Poorie).

Erected in 1990 by granddaughter Margaret Bolger,
Pleacents, Oregon, USA in loving memory of my mother
Catherine Power Sullivan Bolger born Callan 1877.

14. (IHS) in sunburst). Erected by Michael Hoban in
memory of his father and mother. His father died 17th
March 1776 aged 66 yrs, and his mother died 7th March
1784 aged 56 yrs. Lord have mercy on their souls. Also
his son Michael Hoban of Tullemane who dep. this life
October 8th 1818 aged 59 yrs.

15. Erected by Catherine Grady in memory of her
mother Margaret Bowden of Callan who dept this life
the 15th day of November 1816 aged 72 yrs.

16. Erected by William Finnigan in memory of his mother
Catherine Finnigan who dept this life on the 21st
January 1851 aged 65 yrs. Also his brother Edward who
died 28th Sept 1828 aged 10 yrs.

17. (White marble head stone). In loving memory of our
dear parents Frances Hogan who died 3rd July 1912
aged 40 yrs. and Patrick Hogan who died 21st July 1950
(Holy Year) aged 80 yrs. Erected by their loving son John
and daughter Bridget.

18. (Sunburst - Gloria in Excelsios Deo). Erected by
William Cross in memory of his son Michael Cross who
dept this life the 1st February 1824 aged 27 yrs. Also his
daughter Elenor Cross who died the 26th day of
December 1825 aged 21 yrs.

19. Erected by Edmond Quidihy in memory of his father
William Quidihy who died may 7th 1816 aged 62 yrs.
Also his brother Dan Quidihy who died November 1st
1819 aged 38 yrs.

20. Here lies the body of John Banan who dept this life
Decmbr. 27th aged 32 years 1736. His sister Margaret
died April ye 21st aged 36 years 1746. Erected by James
Banan their brother.

21. (Square tombstone. Head on ground). Erected by
Elizabeth Cuddihy alias Dunphy of Kyleaveagh in
memory of her beloved husband Martin Cuddihy who
dept this life April 22nd 1871 aged 55 yrs. Also in
memory of her daughter Kate Phelan (alias Cuddihy)
who died 11th January 1878 aged 27 yrs.

22. (Small stone). Here lies Darby Brophy who dept this
life Dec ye 4th 1752 aged 30 yrs. Also ye body of
William Summers. Erected by Dinis Brophy.

23. (IHS. Gloria in Excelsis Deo). Erected by William
Summers in memory of his father Richard Summers who
dept this life March 29th 1793 aged 67 yrs. Also his
mother Jane Summers alias Dunne who died 29th Sept
1799 aged 65 yrs. Likewise Bryan Summers his brother
who died March 28th 1787 aged 25 yrs.

24. (Sunburst. Gloria in Excelsis Deo). Erected by James
Lynch of Mallardstown in memory of his beloved
daughter Ellen Lynch who dept this life the 2nd March
1820 aged 11 yrs, and another of his children who died
young.

25. Erected by James Lynch of Mallardstown in mem of
his beloved father Mr. James Lynch who dept this life
March 25th 1852 aged 82 yrs. Also his mother Mrs. Mary
Lynch Alias Rice who dept this life the 16th June 1860
aged 90 yrs.

26. (Low upright with crucifixion scenes of the Passion.
Plate 15|). Here lyes ye body of Mary Sweeney alias
Banan who dept this life May ye 20th 1749 aged 39 yrs
wife to James Sweeney of Coruglsilagh.

27. (Small stone. IHS). Here lies ye body of Ann Comford
wife of James Meagher who died March 19th aged 56
1745. Erected by her son Michael Meagher.

28. (Celtic cross. AMDG). Erected by Mrs Catherine Rice
alias Cross in memory of her beloved husband John Rice
who died 5th February 1865 aged 40 yrs. Also one of her
children who died young. (North side). Also her beloved
son Richard J. Rice who died January 2nd 1872 aged 9
yrs. Catherine Rice nee Cross died 27th March 1895 aged
55 yrs.

29. (Celtic cross). Erected in memory of John Downey,
Viper who died 19th April 1871 aged 74 yrs. His wife
Catherine Downey alias O'Brien died 2nd April 1871
aged 67 yrs. Daughter Catherine died 24th May 1898
aged 54 yrs, and their children who died young.

30. (IHS). Erected by Walter Downey of Rabbets Mill in
memory of his father Patrick Downey of Kilbricken who
dept this life Feb 21st 1792 aged 98 yrs. Also his wife
Catherine Downey alias Bergin who dept this life 24th
Dec 1793 aged 96 yrs. with two of their children who
died young.

31. (D.O.M.). God be merciful to the soul of Jno?
Downey who died 16th May 1770 aged 60 yrs. His son
William died the 1st November 1771 aged 23 yrs.

32. (Sunburst, urns). Erected by Mrs Judith Dunne alias
Herbert in memory of her husband Jeremiah Dunne of
Callan who died 17th October 1843 aged 70 yrs. Her
father Edward, also her mother Judith Herbert alias
Byrne, her 2 brothers David and Edward, also her sisters
Mary, Anty and Eleanor who lie here.

Here lies the body of John Kealy died 20th October 1783
aged 51 yrs. Also his wife Mary Kealy alias Walsh. She
died 6th March 1783 aged 42 yrs.

36. (IHS in sunburst). Here lies the body of John Kealy
died 29th March 1794 aged 3 yrs.

37. (IHS. Gloria in excelsios Deo). Here lies the body of
Mary Holdin died 27th October 1793 aged 12 yrs.

38. (2 scrolls back to back). Here lieth ye body of
Matthew Downey who dept this life January ye 17th
1750 aged 28 yrs.

44. (IHS in sunburst and urns. Gloria in excelsios Deo).
Erected by John Walsh of Goatsbridge in memory of his
wife Margaret Walsh, alias Neill who died 12th January
1843 aged 43 yrs. His daughter Honora Walsh aged 13
months. His father Thomas Walsh died 18th August
1821 aged 77 yrs. His mother Honora Walsh alias Brophy
died 8th April 1810 aged 54 yrs.

45. (Plain cross). In memory of John Walsh of Baunta,
Callan who died the 26th June1881 aged 90 yrs. Also his
daughter Honoria who died 9th June 1857 aged 11 yrs,
and his son Peter who died 11th June 1857 aged 19yrs.
Also Ellen Walsh, nee Lynch beloved wife of above John
Walsh who died 1st January 1892 aged 77 yrs. Also Alice
Walsh, nee O'Neill wife of Thomas Walsh, Green St.,
Callan who died November 14th 1887 aged 44 yrs, and
their infant children John, Margaret, and Mary. RIP.

46. (IHS in sunburst. 2 urns). Erected by Thomas Brophy
in memory of his father William Brophy of Ballyline who
died March 15th 1824 aged 54 yrs. Also his brother John
Brophy who dept this life October 4th 1829 aged 30 yrs.
And one child of his own who died in the 13th month of
his age.

47. (IHS in sunburst, decorated stone). This stone was
erected by Philip Byrne of Leighlinbridge in memory of
his father Michael Byrne who dept this life October 13th
1788 aged 30 yrs. Also two of his children James and
Michael. Also his wife Catherine Byrne who died Jan. 9th
1814 aged 74 yrs. (Nee Dunne).

48. (Sunburst, eroded). Erected by Patrick Dunn in
memory of his father John Dunne who dept this life
August 22nd 1821 aged 62 yrs. (Small plaque screwed to
the back of this stone reads): John Dunne in memory of
his great grandfather Patrick Dunne died August 1824
aged 67 yrs. His grandmother Margaret (nee O'Dea). His
parents Patrick Dunne died September 1909 aged 79 yrs.
Margaret died February 1906 aged 76 yrs. Also his son
John Dunne died 1909 aged 3 1/2 yrs.

49. (Upright slab with white marble plaque attached). In
loving memory of Robert Cahill, Green Street, Callan
died 11th October 1982 aged 84 yrs. His parents John
Cahill, Cappahenry died 7th May 1951 and Ann died
28th October 1952. His wife Ellen (Bab) Cahill nee
Gardiner died 7th February 1989 aged 88 yrs. Erected by
Patrick Cahill, West Street, Callan in memory of his
daughter Judith Cahill who died 20th February 1839
aged 17 yrs.

50. (IHS in circle. Chalice on each side). Here lies the
body of Elizabeth Shelly alias Devereux who dept this life
7th April 1791 aged 28 yrs.

51. (Flat stone, very worn). Erected by Mr. James Kelly|.
of Callan in memory of his loving daughter Mrs Mary
Martin wife of ?|.of the City of Dublin|(More, but too
faint to read).

52. (IHS). Erected by James Power of Callan in memory
of his father John Power who died 6th May 1825 aged
55 yrs. His mother Catherine Power died 8th July 1830
aged 35 yrs. His wife Ellen Power died 9th March 1869
aged 45 yrs.

53. Erected by Thomas Griffin of Callan in memory of his
father Michael Griffin who died 11th March 1885 aged
68 yrs. His mother Mary Griffin died 20th July 1888 aged
36 yrs. Also his sons John died 20th April 1892 aged 4
yrs, Michael died 15th June 1898 aged 19 yrs, and Denis
died 24th April 1908 aged 17 yrs. His daughter Kate died
30th March 1895 aged 3 yrs. His wife Mary Griffin died
22nd May 1912 aged 50 yrs.

54. (Cross in decorated circle with urns at each side).
Erected by Mary Townsend of Charlestown,
Massachusetts, U.S. in memory of her beloved father
John Townsend who died 15th August 1844 aged 44 yrs.
Also his son William who died young.

55. (Slab, worn). Here lies interred ye body of Alice Wells
alias Haw, wife of John Wells who dept this life Decembr
ye 11th 1795 aged 34 yrs.

56. (Altar tomb, very worn). Erected by Maria Harney
alias Hern of Callan|..James Harney|Nov..1817. 4 yrs..

58. (HIS in sunburst, scrolls). Erected by James Harney
of Callan in memory of his father James Harney who
dept this life 1st March 1817 aged 79 yrs. Also his
mother Margaret Harney alias white who dept this life
11th November 1827 aged 86 yrs. Likewise his brother
Edward Harney who dept this life 8th June 1822 aged 53
yrs, and likewise his sister Anastasia Dwyer alias Harney
who dept this life 3rd December 1825.....

59. (Cross in circle, highly decorated). Here lies interred
the body of Mrs Johanna McGrath alias Bulger who dept
this life October 5th 1816 aged 52 yrs.

60. (Celtic cross). In memory of Catherine Shea wife of
James Shea, Callan who died in 1870 aged 40 yrs. His
father and mother Patrick and Margaret Shea with his
grandfather and grandmother Edmond and Anne
Mansfield. Also the above James Shea who died 8th June
1881 aged 65 yrs. (South side) Edward O'Shea died July
10th 1910. Catherine O'Shea died August 12th 1918.
Teresa O'Shea died March 16th 1901. Margaret Nolan,
nee O'Shea died August 14th 1933. Elizabeth O'Shea
died August 17th 1917. Mary Ann Funchion, nee O'Shea
died August 2nd 1936.

61. (Sunburst with urns). Here lies the body of Nicholas
Barry who dept this life ye 24th June 1775 aged 53 yrs.
Also his wife Margaret Barry who dept this life ye 16th
June 1792 aged 58 yrs.

62. (High cross on heavy plinth. AMDG). In memory of
Patrick Shelly, Callan who died 27th February 1857 aged
76 yrs. Also his wife Bridget alias Tierney who died 4th
February 1841 aged 50 yrs, and their children Michael,
died 3rd April 1839 aged 19yrs, Richard died 1st May
1847 aged 18yrs, and Mrs Margaret O'Ryan died at
Cashel on Good Friday 1862 aged 28 yrs. (North side).
Patrick Shelly, draper, Bridge St. Callan died 1882
aged 48 yrs. His wife Margaret, nee Lynch, Ahenure
House died 1883 aged 34 yrs. Their sons John killed in
Flanders World War 1 and Patrick J. Shelly, Chief
Probation Officer, New York City died in 1953. Ar dheis
De go raibh a nanamacha. (West side). Inscribed by
Thomas Shelly in memory of his wife Ellen, nee Morris of
Ballywalter who died 26th January 1897 aged 65 yrs, of
his sons James who died 24th Oct. 1897 aged 38 yrs, and
of his son Thomas who died 3rd Nov. 1899 aged 29 yrs.
(South side). - Thomas Shelly, Green St. Callan, patriot,
merchant, historian, and co-founder of the GAA died
28th August 1905 aged 82 yrs.

63. (IHS in sunburst, vases, flowers). Here lies the
body of Mr. Jeremiah Tierney of Callan. He died 16th
June 1799 aged 41.

64. (White marble cross). Erected by Teresa M Shelly in
memory of her beloved husband John F Shelly who died
5th July 1902. (South side) " The above Teresa M
Shelly died 14th February 1944. John Shelly died 12th
January 1973. His wife Siobhan, nee Murphy died 11th
September 1997.

65. (2 slabs - numbers 65 and 66, one behind the other).
(Rear slab, number 65) - This stone was erected by
Pierce Murphy of Newtown in memory of his wife
Catherine Murphy alias Brophy who died 18th
September 1810 aged 60 yrs. Also 2 of their children
who lie here interred.

66. (Sunburst in urns). God be merciful to Philip Shee
who departed this life the 1st of March 1769 aged 78 yrs
with 3 of his children.

67. (Urns, sunburst). Erected by William Shee in
memory of his father Mr. Pierce Shee of Bennetsbridge.
He depd this life 13th day of April 1789 aged 62 yrs.

68. (Grave with kerb stone). Erected by Mary Power,
Callan in memory of her father Martin Power who died
1882. Her mother Sarah died 1919 aged 83 yrs, and her
brother Thomas died 1920 aged 50 yrs. Minnie Power
died 1st May 1944. Daniel Ward died 31 May 1939.
Sarah Ward died 25th March 1966. Martin Ward died
28th June 1988 aged 70 yrs. Mary McGuinness, nee
Ward died 10th May 2002 aged 93 yrs.

69. In loving memory of Francis Dowling who died 30th
March 1957 aged 69 yrs., and Margaret Dowling, nee
Handley who died 12th May 1957 aged 71 yrs. Also Mary
Handley died 2nd February 1960 aged 81 yrs.

70. (Small slab. Triangular top with cross in centre). In
memory of Honoria Flanagan, alias Ryan who died
February 6th 1887 aged 72 yrs.

71. Rough marker stone.

72. (3 cherubs - each side and centre. IHS with cross over
H). Erected by William Power in memory of his father
Robert Power died 25th October 1817 aged 76 yrs. His
mother Elinor Power alias Purcell died December 28th
1812 aged 66 yrs. Also their granddaughter Catherine
Power.

73. (Table slab. Mostly illegible). Here lieth Michael Rice
died 6th February|and son Michael died 5th October
178? Aged 10 yrs.

74. (IHS in sunburst). God be merciful to the soul of
Edmond Sheehan who departed this life 13th July 1790
aged 68 yrs.

75. (Blessed Virgins head). In loving memory of Mary
O'Reilly, Mill Street, Callan who died 18th March 1978.
Her sister Anne Hayes died 8th September 1986 aged 80
yrs.

76. (Broken cross). Erected by Mr. and Mrs. Hanigan in
memory of her beloved mother Anne Lanigan, nee Hawe
died 7th August 1870 aged 62 yrs. Also her beloved
father Michael Lanigan who died 29th October 1878
aged 73 yrs. William Sonny Lanigan died 23rd February
1986 aged 76 yrs. (On North side) " Sacred to the
memory of their children, Denis, Joseph, Michael
Francis, and Augustine Joseph Hanigan. (On South side)
" Also two children who died young.

77. (IHS in sunburst, very old). Here lies the body of
Patrick Hawe died Sept. ye 25th 1752 aged 24 yrs. Lord
be merciful to his soul. Erected by Matt Hawe.

78. (Sunburst with IHS). Erected by Thomas Feehan in
memory of his daughter Anastasia Feehan who died
20th June 1841 aged 19 yrs. Also his son Michael Feehan
who died in America October 1841 aged 29 yrs. With 6
of his children who died young.

79. (IHS in sunburst). Erected by Anne Hawe of Callan in
memory of her daughter Mary Hawe who died 16th May
1872 aged 9 yrs.

80. (Broken stone. Cross in circle). Pray for the soul of
Margaret Malone, alias Devine died April 7th 1883 aged
52 yrs. Her mother Bridget Devine, and her father
Jeremiah Devine.

81. (Table tomb). Here lies the body of John Tearney
who parted this life 14th March|.aged 60 yrs. Also his
children Thomas, Mary and Margaret Tearney. Erected
by his wife Margaret Tearney and William Tearney, his
son A.D. 1777.

82. (Table slab on ground). Illegible.

83. (IHS in circle. On bottom of stone there is a sword
and decoration in what looks like a banner). Here lies
the body of Edmond Crook who parted this life Jan. 6th
1743 aged 60 yrs. Erected by his son Kearns Crook.

84. (New stone). In loving memory of John Hanley of
Callan died 26 Sept 1970 aged 90. His wife Sarah died 17
Dec. 1980 aged 91. Their son Kevin died 1920 aged 3.
Mary Hanley, nee Norman died 28 June 1948. Hannah
Hanley died 1907. Edward Hanley died 17 July 1927.
Josephine (Josie) Hanley died 9th March 1990 aged 83.
R.I.P. Erected by John Hanley (junior).

85. (Small stone, very worn). Here lieth the body of
James Croak who departed this life on the 17th March
1752 aged 74 yrs.

86. (Black marble head stone, cross with rosary beads in
centre, decoration each side). In loving memory of
Laurence Hanly, Ahenure died 6th Nov. 1932 aged 52.
His wife Margaret, nee Connors died 25 Dec. 1962 aged
84. Her brother Thomas. Erected by Laurence Hanly Jnr.
And the Barry family, Ahenure.

87. In memory of our parents James Walsh, Green St.,
Callan died 16 Jan. 1948. His wife Bridget, nee Wall died
5th May 1911. Our grandparents Patrick Walsh died
25th May 1931. His wife Mary, nee Barry died 25 No.
1938. R.I.P. Erected by their daughters Mary, Eileen,
Bridie.

88. (Slab on ground). Here lies the body of Samuel Cooke
who dept this life July the|177? Aged 27 yrs.

90. (Altar tomb gone sideways- almost totally illegible).

William Butler of New York, U.S. America to the memory
of his father John Butler who died 20th March 1862
aged 80 yrs. Also his mother Mary Butler, alias Branoge
who died 20th March 1860 aged 62 yrs.

94. (New stone, ivy leaves). In loving memory of the
Scully family, Callan. Also Aidan O'Connor died 22 July
1964, and his wife Bridget died 25 Aug. 1986. Erected by
James O'Connor.

95. (At East boundary wall). In loving memory of Francis
O'Brien, and his wife Brigid. Their son James died 27
Dec.1973. Also members of the Ward family interred
here. Erected by his loving wife Maura O'Brien and
family.

98. (Very large table tomb). Here lie interred the
remains of Laurence Smyth of Ballywalter who died on
the 3rd day of November 1749 aged 62 years; of
Valentine Smyth Esq., eldest son who died on the 4th of
April 1802 aged 84 years; of the sons of Laurence, who
died on the 30th of January 1812 aged 69 years; Francis,
who died 31st of October aged 62 years, William who
died on the 18th of May 1812 aged 60 years; of
Valentine Laurence Smyth Esq., the eldest son of
Laurence, who died on the 9th of January 1813 aged 44
years, and of Valentine Francis Smyth, only son of
Francis, who died on the 16th of April 1811 aged 36
years.

99. Here lies the remains of Thomas McMullen who died
Nov. the 13th 1789 aged 13 yrs. Also Elenor McMullen
who died Jan.14th 1794 aged 17 yrs with three of their
sisters. Erected by their father George McMullen who
also dept this life Nov. 12th 1811 aged 70 yrs, also his
wife Margaret McMullen alias Grigg who died 26 July
1805 aged 67 yrs.

100. Iron cross, no inscription.

101. (Small Celtic cross). Erected by Mrs Ellen Rooke,
U.S.A. in memory of her father John Fleming ex Sgt. RIC
died March 29th 1894. Also her mother Julia died
October 26th 1888 and their children.

104. (Cross over IHS in sunburst). Erected by Honour
Devana in memory of her daughter Margaret Devana
who dept this life August 20th 1803 aged 24 yrs.

105. (Cross in a crest). Erected by Patrick O'Brien of
Callan in memory of his son James O'Brien who died 1st
