TRANSCRIPTION OF TOMBSTONES

Tombstones inside St. Marys Church, Callan. Old
Medieval Church
(These Transcriptions were made in August 2005 by
Nancy Power, Rita O'Neill, Maisie Condon, Jimmy
Hoyne, Philip Lynch, Luke Murphy and Joe Kennedy.
Typed and arranged by Joe Kennedy and rechecked
February 2006. Please refer to the transcriptions
published by Tom Shelly in 1872 and Canon William
Carrigan in 1905 to get a more complete list of
inscriptions inside the church).

Nave and side aisles.

1. Here lyeth ye body of James Downey who dept. this
life April ye 7th 1730 aged 40 yrs. Also his wife Alice
Butler who died Sept. 20th 1741 aged 56 yrs. Also
James Downey son of James Downey. He died March
20th 1747 aged yrs. Erected by Dinnis Downey.

2. (Celtic cross - truncated) In memory of Eliza Tarleton
Weld youngest daughter of Matthew Richard and Dora
Weld, Coolaghmore House who died June 24th 1867
aged 8 yrs.

3. Here lies the body of Will Wilder, Chief of police,
third son of James Wilder Esq. Of Castlewilder, County
Longford who dep this life on the 28th May 1838

4. (IHS in sunburst). This was placed here by John
Galway Esq. of Westcourt to the memory of Thomas
Newbold who lies buried underneath, who served his
master faithfully, honestly and affectionately above 40
yrs and who died 24th Sept. 1774 aged 59 yrs.

5. (Rectangular stone). Here lieth interred the children
of Doctor Butler who died young. Thomas, Theobald
and Eliza aged 8 yrs. Anne Butler died 28th Dec. 1900
aged 73 yrs.

6. Here lie the remains of Molly Croke who dept this
life 17th Nov 1838 aged 76 yrs. (See Shelly for further
info).

7. (Floor slab). In loving memory of Mary Heron,
Castleview, Callan who died 15th Nov. 1986 aged 86
yrs. Her sisters Bridget Anne Bastin Heron died 5th
May 1993 aged 84 yrs., Charlotte Bridget Heron died
7th Jan. 1994 aged 96 yrs.

8. (Wall plaque). In loving memory of Ellen Heron,
Castleview, Callan who died 3rd Aug. 1947 aged 75 yrs.
Her husband Thomas Heron died 12th March 1954
aged 92 yrs. Their son James died 8th May 1959 aged
48 yrs. Also their daughter Bridget who died in infancy.
Dr William J. Heron died March 17th 1969. John Heron
Died 7th Oct. 1981, and Michael died 5th Dec. 1990.

9. (Stone sarcophagus- modern). Erected to the
memory of William Cody, Callan who died 12th March
1873 aged 45 yrs. His sister Mary Cody died 11th Sept.
1886 aged 64 yrs. His brothers Patrick Cody died 5th
Nov. 1889 aged 78 yrs, Pierce Cody died 3rd Sept.
1900 aged 86 yrs, and Thomas Cody died young. (On
other side). Also in memory of Patrick Hayes who died
25th Dec. 1852 aged 44 yrs. His wife Kate Hayes, nee
Cody who died 23rd March 1877 aged 66 yrs. Their
sons John Hayes died 26th Dec. 1905 aged 62 yrs,
Thomas died 3rd Feb.1908 aged 68 yrs, and Dr. PC
Hayes died 28th Feb. 1908 aged 58 yrs.

10. (Broken tombstone beside pillar). No inscription.

11. In loving memory of Christopher Keating, 7 Collins
Park, Callan who died 22nd Jan. 1984 aged 38yrs. Also
his father Patrick Keating who died 27th July 1964
aged 64 yrs. Erected by his loving wife Joan and
children.

12. (Coffin slab). No inscription.

13. (Floor slab). In loving memory of Michael Keating,
Cannafahy, Callan who died 23rd Jan. 1996 aged 83
yrs.

14. (Old stone in latin. Raised cross in centre with
latticed ornamentation). Inscription around edges.
Unable to read.

15. Here lies the body of Stephen James Coppinger
only child of John and Elizabeth Coppinger of
Ballinvolane in the county of and the city ofâ€|..
(broken).

16. (Very ornate cross slab). Beneath this slab lie the
remains of Mary the beloved wife of Robert Toomey of
Callan who died 29th Aug. 1864 aged 58 yrs.

17. (Floor slab in 3 parts). Inscription in latin around
the edges.

18. Coffin shaped slab). No inscription.

19. (Stone with implements of the Passion). No
inscription.

20. (Floor slab at wall in 3 pieces. Parts of it missing).
Latin around the edges. Butlerâ€| (unreadable).

21. (Upper part of floor slab - raised cross with lattice
ornamentation on top).

22. (Fragment of tomb). |1822 two of their
children |.Harfield Esq. of Callan died Nov. 1829
aged 76 yrs.

23. (Floor slab broken in 2 pieces. Raised cross in
centre). Inscription around edge. Unable to read.

24. (Broken slab). No inscription.

25. Here lies the body of John | Tirney only child of Will
and Bridget Tirney of Westcourt born 6th Aug 1742,
died 27th Nov. 1743.

26. (Fragments of coffin shaped slab with incised shaft
down the middle).

27. (Coffin shaped slab - cross down the middle).

28. Erected by Patrick Coughlin of Callan in memory of
his sister Eleanor Cody, alias Coughlin who died 2nd
Dec. 1813 aged 29 yrs.

29. (Truncated Celtic cross). In memory of Eleanor
Frances Fox daughter of Hubert Fox Esq. of Killaghy
Castle born Sept. 16th 1868, died Feb. 24th 1872.

30. (Broken coffin slab - raised cross)

31. (Broken coffin slab - raised ornate cross).

32. (Coffin slab - incised cross in centre). Inscription
around edge. Unable to read.

33. (Large table tomb on 6 pillars). Here lies the body
of William Harvey who dept this life 6th May 1797
aged 61 yrs. Also his wife Mary who dept the 15th Oct.
1807 aged 70 yrs. Here also interred are the remains
of Maria Eagle, grand daughter of Mary Harvey and
eldest daughter of Eric Eagle Esq. of Callan who dept
this life 4th Oct. 1835 aged 20 yrs.

34. (Floor slab - decorated cross in relief). Inscription
around the edge. Unable to
read.

35. (Slab). No inscription.

36. (Tombstone broken - concrete surround). No
inscription.

37. (Broken stone - raised shaft of cross).
â€|..1597â€|( Shelly gives the following translation
from Latin under that date. “Here lies Nicholas
Comerford, who died 25th July 1597” -

38. (Worn coffin slab - cross with IHS on bottom. Fleur
de Lis on top). Writing around the edge. Unable to
read.

39. (Fleur de Lis on top of cross - crests on the side).
Inscription in Latin. Shelly translates - “Here lies
Thomas Grace rector of Callan died Jan 1583”

40. (Broken stone base of cross). No inscription.

41. (On pillar). Erected by James Kearney, Callan in
memory of his wife Frances Kearney (nee Tallis) who
died 3rd May 1903, and his son James B. Kearney who
died 24th Oct 1908. The above James Kearney died 9th
Nov. 1941 aged 85 years.

42. (Raised slab tomb). Sacred to the memory of Maria
Emma Mollan wife of Lieut. Colonel William Campbell
Mollan C.B. who died at Newtown House on the 16th
Nov. 1895 aged 55 yrs.

43. (Coffin slab with cross in relief). No inscription.

44. (Coffin slab - Fleur de Lis). No inscription.

45. (Altar tomb). Inscription in latin. Shelly translates
as follows - "Here lies James Neales, Sovereign and
Burgess of Callan, who caused this monument to be
made for his parents, for himself and for his posterity,
the 10th day of January, in the year of Our Lord 1624.
His first wife Johanna Brinne(Byrne?) died on the 2nd
February anno dom., 1596. His second wife Judith
Tobin died _____|..J. N. (James Neales). died March 17th
1640ť.

46. (Small floor slab near pillar). In memory of our dear
father Henry Rogers, Loughbrack who died 16th Jan.
1928 aged 81 yrs, and mother Ellen Rogers who died
9th March 1933 aged 87 yrs. My brother William J.
Rogers died 19th Dec. 1900 aged 17 yrs. Also my
grandparents James Baker died 24th July 1877 aged 66
yrs and Ellen Baker died 25th Oct. 1905 aged 84 yrs.
My aunt Anne Baker died 12th June 1910 aged 71 yrs.
Erected by Ellen J. Rogers 1929.

47. (Slab - cross down the middle). Inscription around
the edges. Unable to read.

48. (Floor slab - Fleur de Lis on top). Here lieth the
body of Hennery Baker who died the 9th of May 1699.

49. (Floor slab badly broken). Inscription around the
edge. Unable to read.

50. (Partial badly broken slab). Inscription. Unable to
read.

51. (On pillar). In loving memory of my beloved
husband H. Charles Gregory Esq. JP of Westcourt,
Callan who entered into rest July 22nd 1918 in the
91st year of his age. (Additional information relative to
this inscription on a plaque in chancel).

52. (Altar tomb - Coats of arms on each end, and
implements of the passion on the front). Inscription in
Latin. Translated by Shelly as follows - "Here lies
the celebrated man Gerald Comerford, Esq. Who was
Kings Attorney of Connaught and Thomand, second
Baron of the Exchequer, and finally was appointed
Chief Justice of Munster. His life departed at
Coolnamuck, in the county of Waterford on the 4th of
November 1604, in the second year of the happy
government of our illustrious Lord king James, and the
seven-and-thirtieth of his reign in Scotland"ť. (See
Shelly for further information).

53. (Rough slab). No inscription.

54. (Coat of arms - decoration).

55. (Wall monument on the East gable of the South
aisle). In Latin. Translated by Shelly as follows -!
fortunate stone, which enriched by the death of
Thomas dost cover his bones in the Sepulchral mound.
Thou dost hold the flower of Callan in thy gloomy urn,
yet this flower does not renew its beauty by vernal
shower. England, the country of his ancestors, gave to
him an illustrious name. The glory of a house that was
never closed still survives. Live for Heaven where alone
life is! At death all the glory of the world fades. Learn
to live for God alone! 1629” (See Shelly for further
information).

56. In memory of Thomas Baker, Tullamaine died 24th
Jan. 1889 aged 69 yrs, and his wife Anne Baker who
died 19th March 1928 aged 87 yrs.

57. (Floor slab - Fleur de Lis. Inscription on side of
cross). Unable to read.

58. (Box tomb). Beneath this tomb rests the body of
Humphrey Hartley Esq. late of Fitzwilliam Square in the
City of Dublin who dept this life on the 26th Oct. 1825
in the 63rd year of his age at Callan where he then
held the situation of Sovereign, and had for many
years previously discharged that office and greatly
contributed to promote the prosperity and
improvement of that town. Erected by his eldest son
William as a tribute of filial respect and gratitude to
the memory of a kind and liberal parent and
benevolent member of society.

59. (Large stone - flat on ground). Here lies deposited
the remains of Bridget Merry alias Cody with two of
her children. She died 13th June 1819 in the 33rd year
of her age. Also the remains of her son John Merry
who died 2nd May 1824 aged 12 yrs. Also the remains
of her husband Michael Merry of Callan who dept. this
life 7th May 1825 aged 48 yrs.

60. (Decorated floor slab - coat of arms).

61. (Floor slab- Fleur de Lis design of cross). Inscription
on side. Unable to read.

62. (Coffin shaped floor slab - Fleur de Lis design of
cross).

63. (Floor slab). Inscription on side. Unable to read.

64. (Wall plaque). In memory of the Rev. Benjamin
Senior, Rector of Callan and Burnchurch 1892-1915,
and Chancellor of St. Canices Cathedral 1905-1915
who died 27th Feb. 1915. Tablet erected by
parishioners of Callan and Burnchurch.

65. (Broken wall plaque. - Kilkenny Archaeologicl
Societ transcribed the following not now visible). In
memory of George Stevenson eldest son of Rev. Butler
Stevenson, Rector of Callan, and of Westcourt in this
county, and Harriet Mary Ann, daughter of James
Graham of Richardly House and Barrack Lodge in the
County of Cumberland who died 4th June 1854 aged
28 yrs.

66. (Broken wall plaque). No inscription

67. (Wall plaque - East end). Sacred to the memory of
the Rev. Butler Stevenson of Westcourt for many years
Rector of Callan. He was the 2nd son of the Rev.
George Stevenson DD, Dean of Kilkenny. Died the 9th
Aug. 1862 aged 65 yrs.

68. (Wall plaque). In loving memory of Henry Charles
Gregory Esq. JP of Westcourt son of the Rev. William
Gregory MA, Rector of Fiddown, Co. Kilkenny who died
22nd July 1918 in his 91st year. Erected by his widow
and children.

69. (Wall plaque). Sacred to the memory of Reginald C.
Gregory, Capt. R.N. died 5th Feb. 1917. Ernest
Gregory, Cape Mounted Rifles died 5th July 1913.
Godfrey L. Gregory, Capt. Durham Light Infantry died
5th Jan. 1918. Henry W. Gregory, Lt. Commander R.N.
died 10th Sept. 1917. Sons of Henry C. Gregory Esq.
J.P. Westcourt.

70. (Wall plaque). Sacred to the memory of
Charlotte Anne the dearly loved wife of Henry
Charles Gregory of Westcourt, Co. Kilkenny and
youngest daughter of the late Rev. Charles Butler
Stevenson of Westcourt, Rector of Callan who died
5th June 1879 aged 44 yrs. Also their dearly beloved
children Maud Violet, William Charles, Georgina
Sybil and Maud Genevive who all died young.

71. (Wall plaque). Sacred to the memory of Charles
Alderley Stevenson Esq., Capt. and Brevet Major
H.M. 47th Regiment and Knight of the Legion of
Honour who died at Nice 3rd March 1857 in the
30th year of his age from a disease contracted on
service in the Crimea during the siege of
Sebastopol. Erected by his brother officers.

72. (Wall plaque). Sacred to the dearly loved
memory of Grace Ursula Levince, 5th daughter of
Henry Charles Gregory of Westcourt who died at
Lindholme, Cheltenham on the 16th Jan.1908 aged
34 yrs.
