HISTORY: LETTERS, RICHARD TWISS JR./E.KENNEY TO LORD HERBERT
JULY 1, 1682

Letter No 479. Richard Twiss Jr's account of KILLBANAVAN upon oath.

The account How MR JONES got KILLBANAVAN from
RICHARD TWISS. He went several times upon
KILLENTERRNA with swords and pistols and commanded
the said RICHARD with his wife and family to turnout of
the lands. Notwithstanding, RICHARD kept in possession
until all his tenant's and his corn was in stacks upon the
fields. Then JONES puts crosses in the stacks and would
not permit RICHARD or his tenants to put corn in one
"Haggartt" to save it from stealing and cattle.
Whereupon twenty families were ready to famish if the
said RICHARD had not sold JONES the lands of
KILLBANAVAN to salve the poor peoples lives. And all he
had for it was to have it gone in arrears for rent. The
whole right title that he purchased belongs really to his
lordship.

Present Morrish Connor RICHARD TWISS his mark

Additional Comments:
It would seem Richard (son of Richard Twiss) made a
mark instead of signature. Was this an indication of
illiteracy?
