Newspaper: Compensation Awards, Employer's Liability Act (1883)

Mr. NELIGAN, Q.C. Recorder of Derry, had two actions
today at the Quarter Sessions claiming compensation
under the Employer's Liability Act. In the first case, a
woman named McELWEE claimed 100 pounds for the death of
her son; and in the second case, Margaret DOHERTY, a
widow, claimed 300 pounds for the death of her son. Both the
deceased had been killed by the falling of an old house
which the defendant, Alexander McCLURE, a contractor
was taking down. The Recorder explained the nature of
the responsibility which the act imposed, and he gave a
decree for a year's wages, amounting, in McELWEE'S case
to 31.4.0. and in DOHERTY'S case to 74., with costs in
each case.
