BALLYSPILLANE CHURCHYARD
  [From Mr. James Coleman]

This secluded churchyard lies a little below a cross-roads
about three miles north-east of Midleton Railway Station.
Though seemingly seldom used, it was quite free from weeds;
whilst the aged trees by which it is overshadowed gave it a
singularly calm, cool, and reposeful air on the very hot
August day I visited it. There are but a few graves, and
fewer headstones, and not a vestige that I could see of the
old church that must have stood here. The Spillanes, from
whom the name is derived, are still represented in the
neighbourhood, and have their burial-ground here. The
following form about half the number of inscriptions to be
seen, the remainder being either recut, or the headstones so
much ivy- grown as to prevent them being read:-
