1881 DIRECTORY OF ENNISTYMON, LAHINCH, LISCANNOR

ENNISTYMON is a fair and market town in the parish of
KILMANAHEEN, barony of Corcomroe, county of Clare, 126 miles
w. by s. from Dublin, 16 ½ w. by n. from Ennis, and 7 E.
from Milltown Malbay; situated in a picturesque and fertile
district on the river Inagh, where a little below the bridge
a stupendous rock crosses and forms a beautiful waterfall.
The air of this place is very salubrious, being within two
miles of the shore of LAHINCH, a small sea bathing village,
whose noble strand extends for two miles in a semi circular
form. Adjoining the town is Ennistymon House, the residence
of Colonel M'Namara, the proprietor of the town. A great and
marked improvement has been made of late years in the
general appearance and commercial importance of this place.
New buildings have sprang up, houses have been remodeled,
and trade and enterprise have developed themselves to a
great extent, and promise to progress as favourably in the
future. A line of railway is about being worked during the
present year (1880), having connexion with the Ennis
branches, and taking in the rising towns of Carofin and
Miltown Malbay, having Ennistymon as the principal station.
A quarter of a mile outside the town are the Ennistymon
woolen mills, the property of Mr. P.J. Dwyer, where friezes
and threads of excellent texture are woven and supplied to
the Dublin houses. The Protestant Episcopal church is an
elegant cruciform building, with octagonal tower, surmounted
by pinnacles, built in 1830. The Roman Catholic church is a
neat and commodious building, likewise cruciform, with a
beautiful altar piece. There is a Christian Brothers'
school, in which a large number of boys are taught; and also
schools under the management of the Sisters of Mercy, where
females of the lumber class are taught gratuitously. The
Convent of Mercy is an elegant building, situated on the
summit of a hill close to the Roman Catholic church, and
commanding a view of the most charming scenery, which
consists in the appearance of the raging torrent of the
cascades close by. The windings of the river Inagh, as it
calmly glides hither from the Atlantic, hiding itself as it
comes nearer in the surrounding woods and groves; and the
view of the distant cliffs of Moher, which are a sight not
to be lost, as they hang a whole solid mass of rock to the
height of 900 feet over the sea. The convent is composed of
a centre building with a very handsome porch, and wings at
either side. The left wing has a square tower which forms
the entrance to the National schools, and a winding
staircase that leads to a very pretty chapel, and also to a
school room where the higher branches are taught to young
ladies. The completion of the whole building cost about
£6,000. Quarter sessions are held in January, April, June
and October and petty sessions every Monday. Fairs on the
25th of March, 15th May, 2nd July, 22nd August, 29th
September, 19th November, and 17th December. Population in
1861, 1,454, and in 1871, 1,411.

LAHINCH, or Lahensey, is a village in the parishes of
KILMANAHEEN and KILMACREAHY, barony of Corcomroe, about 2
1/2miles w.s.w. from Ennistymon, and at the head of
Liscannor bay. It is a favourite bathing place for visitors
from all parts of the county, and from the counties of
Limerick and Tipperary. There are now National schools here,
also a Protestant church, a Roman Catholic church, and a
constabulary barrack. Population in 1861, 387; and in 1871,
317.

LISCANNOR is a village in the parish of KILMACREAHY, barony
of Corcomore, about 4 ½ miles w. from Ennistymon, and on the
north side of Liscannor bay. There is a Roman Catholic
church and a school under the National Board here. Liscannor
has a fine bay, where vessels arrive from Glasgow, Liverpool
and Galway with coal and other goods. There is a village
adjoining called the LOWER QUAY, the inhabitants of which
generally subsist by fishing, large numbers of fish being
taken in the season. Population in 1861, 3?4 and in 1871,
415.
