The Golden Wedding Anniversary of a County Carlow Couple - Mary Whelan Ward and Michael Ward from Bagenalstown Parish, County Carlow celebrate their Fiftieth Wedding Anniversary on November 23, 1936 in Joliet, Illinois. They immigrated to America, Mary between 1883 and 1884 and Michael in 1885. They met in Joliet, Illinois and were married there, at St. Mary's Carmelite Roman Catholic Church, on November 23, 1886.

Young Mary Whelan Ward, born circa 1864, the daughter of Patrick Whelan of Grange, Co. Carlow and Mary Walshe Whelan from Aughabeg-Corries, Bagenalstown Parish, Co. Carlow. The photograph was taken either shortly before she left Ireland or shortly after she came to America, sometime between 1883 and 1884.

Mary Walshe Whelan, born in 1839 at Aughabeg-Corries (Bagenalstown Parish) Co. Carlow, the daughter of Patrick Walshe and Margaret Sheehan Walshe.  The photograph was taken about 1896 in Joliet, Illinois, USA, when she came for a visit to America and to attend the baptism of her grandson, John James Ward, the son of her daughter, Mary Whelan Ward. Afterwards she returned back home to Ballyknockan-Fennagh (Bagenalstown), Co. Carlow. Ireland

Mary Walshe Whelan, born circa 1839, in Aughabeg-Corries (Bagenalstown Parish), Co. Carlow. After being left widowed by her first husband Patrick Whelan of Grange, who she married in 1863. She married a second time in 1872, to a man also named Patrick Whelan from Ballyknockan-Fennagh (Bagenalstown). This photograph was taken circa 1896 during a visit to her daughter and son-in-law, Mary Whelan Ward and Michael Ward in Joliet, Illinois, USA.

Mary Whelan Ward, the daughter of Mary Walshe Whelan, Aughabeg-Corries (Bagenalstown), Co. Carlow and Patrick Whelan, Grange, Co. Carlow, and her husband, Michael Ward, the son of Mary Flaherty Ward and Patrick Ward, along with the two eldest of their five children, Patrick and Joseph; photographed circa 1890 in Joliet, Illinois, USA. Mary Whelan and her future husband Michael Ward, although living near each other in County Carlow, met and married in Joliet, Illinois, in 1886, where a number of Carlow people had begun to settle in the latter part of the nineteenth century.
