Thomas
(Tom) Brennan was born
Sunday 9th July1876 in
Ballickmoyler, Co.
Laois, and Godparents were
Patrick Dargan & Mary Bourke He
passed away on Tuesday 26th Nov 1957 in Portlaoise Hospital, Co Laois. He
married
Mary Anne Moran
on Wednesday 20th May
1908 at Cathedral of the Assumption, Carlow. She is the
daughter of
James Moran and
Mary Kelly. She was born on the
Monday 27th Sep 1875 in Arles, Co Laois, and died on the
Tuesday 23 Feb 1960
in The Cottage, at Cooper Hill Demesne , Ballickmoyler, Co Laois.
Mary Anne Moran
at the time of her wedding on Wednesday 20th May May 1908
she was living and working
at
Clovelly House on the Athy Road in Carlow.
I recentely discovered that
Clovelly
was the name of a house on the Athy Road in Carlow town and
it was located in a place called
Gurley’s plot
(aka Shaw Park, aka Town Park).
She was known for miles around as "The Lovely Lady in
Black" In 1957 she received a letter from
Mr. Oliver Flannagan
TD offering his condolence on the death of her husband
Thomas Brennan.
Thomas Brennan
was a
Stonemason
by trade.
When Granddad was out working she had to look after the
buisness in Cooper Hill Demesne such as collecting apples from
the orchard and tending to the vegetable patch, sowing
all sorts of vegetables such as cabbage, onions, carrots
and potatoes. There was also the hens and probably a pig
to look after as well the general household chores and
looking after there five children.

Thomas
was a Stonemason by trade and was self employedworked for himself. He travelled great
distances on foot both in Co. Laois and Co.
Carlow. He was in constant demand because of his skill working with
stone. He carried out a lot of repairs on property belonging to The
Feehans of Ballickmoyler who ran the Post Office and grocery shop in
Ballickmoyler.
In the photo below, we have
Markie
Brennan, Molly Proctor and a close friend c.1937. The young girl is
believed to one of the Proctor girls from The Mall, Killeshin.
Markie
played football for Killeshin. (see
football team picture) and he played several musical instriments and sung in the Arles and Ballickmoyler
Brass Bands with Michael Ramsbottom.
Michael Ransbottom was a great
musician and played in Irish Céilí dance bands.
Mark (Markie) Brennan could play a
number of different instraments including the Cornet, Trombone, Tin
Whistle & Mouth Organ. He was also a great singer and he sang regularly
with Michael and the band in places like St Fiacc's Hall in
Graiguecullen.
Michael Ransbottom was devastated when Markie Brennan
passed away in 1939,
because they were inseparable. They attended band practic together as
well as preformed on stage together and went everywhere together. Markie was
a member of GAA Killeshin Football club and he passed away on 6th November
1939. age 25 years old, as a result of an injury received while playing
