File of documents arising from the shooting dead by the constabulary of Thomas Waters, an army deserter accused of stealing at The Ridge, County Carlow

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from James Battersby, Sub Inspector of the Carlow Constabulary, Carlow, to Sir John Harvey, reporting on the shooting dead of Thomas Waters charged with stealing firearms by a party of constables; noting that the constables included William Kidd, Tyndall and Finnerty. Also copy of arrest warrant noting that Waters had been accused of the theft by George Griffith of The Ridge, County Carlow. Also letter from Patt Waters, brother of Thomas, Raheenkill, County Carlow, claiming that his brother was accused of being an army deserter and was unlawfully shot by John Finerty, constable. Also letters from Samuel F Roberts, magistrate, Ravinden [Rathvinden], County Carlow, to James Battersby and other unidentified recipient, noting that Waters was guilty of breaching the law and was a deserter from the 69th Regiment. Also affidavit of George Griffith, The Ridge, accusing Waters of theft. Also covering letters from John Harvey, Inspector General, 11 Hume Street, Dublin, to William Gregory, Under Secretary. Includes memorandum from unidentified official discussing the case.
