Market Cross looking down Castle St, which leads to Castle Hill and Coal Market. Carlow c.1950

It was known locally as the L&N and it was located at No. 4 Castle Street, Carlow during the 1950's and sold tea and groceries.  In the photo above the shop is located on the right to the left of the No Parking sign. (click on the image to enlarge)

There were about 22 L&N stores throughout Ireland and perhaps 100 stores throughout the British Isles.

In the 1890's each branch of L&N issued tokens which were called 'Checks'. These checks were for 2oz, 1/4lb, 1/2lb and 1lb.  These were exchangeable for cups & saucers etc.
