Desmond Early

Carlow mourns the passing of Desmond Early.
Mr. Desmond Early, who died on Monday, the
fortitude of a long and fatal illness over, was one of the most lovable
and respected citizens of Carlow.
In his case one can say, without overworking a
cliché, that he was truly one of "nature's gentlemen".
Carlow grew to know him when he returned from
another career in the Far East to take over the legal business of his
father, William Early, who died in the late 1930s - the old firm of P.
J. Byrne, Solicitors, Dublin Street, Carlow.
The late Desmond Early, who had already chosen
another career in foreign parts, set out to qualify as a solicitor.
An active athlete since his schooldays, he
played Rugby Football for Trinity College Dublin and for Carlow.
Mr. Early was for some years a director of the
Graigue-Cullen Corn and Coal Company.
He took an interest in many charitable works,
and in recent years he was prominently associated with the foundation of
the first Cheshire Home in Ireland, at Shillelagh.
There was none more popular than Desmond Early
both in his professional life and as a sportsman.
In his legal business he set himself standards
of service and integrity all interlaced with a dominating concept of
Christian charity, which was always reflected in his personal and
professional dealings with people.
It was his refinement of character that he could
rarely bring himself to see evil in any man, and certainly never to
speak disparagingly about anyone.
Carlow people, and his friends far-and-wide, who
lament the early death of Desmond Early, feel with his widow and young
family the profound loss of a man who enriched all his contacts in life
by his example as a sincere Christian gentleman.
He will have more than most of us to recommend
him before the Divine Judge.
