          Carlow c.1948
							Edward Maffett.
Newspaper cutting in the Pat Purcell Papers.
							Nationalist and Leinster Times.
							March 1948.
							Mr.
Edward Sinclair Maffett. The death took place on
Saturday last of Mr Edward Sinclair Maffett at his
residence, Thornville, Palatine, Carlow. Aged 85, he qualified as a
solicitor in 1887 and was a member of a well-known
firm of Estate Agents in South Frederick Street,
Dublin. He came to Carlow in 1893 and practised at
Leinster Crescent up to 1923 when he retired. He had
a very extensive practice in Carlow and the
							adjoining Counties.

							 In
his early years he was a keen sportsman, being a
founder member of the Bective Rugby Football Club.
He was a first class fisherman and made fishing
history last year, at Loughrea, when at the age of
84, he had the best catch of the season. He was a cousin of Lord
Northcliffe and is survived by his wife, two sons
and two daughters. The funeral took place to
Killeshin cemetery after service in St. Mary's
Church, conducted by Venerable Archdeacon Ridgeway,
assisted by Rev. Stanley. Judge's Tribute. At Carlow Circuit Court on
Tuesday, Judge Sealy referred to the recent death of
an old practitioner in that Court, Mr E.S. Maffett. His name, said his honor,
could only be a name to most of the lawyers in Court
as he had retired many years ago. He, as a member of
the bar, knew Mr Maffett very well and he was a man
of great ability in his profession and of high
integrity. He was a very satisfactory man to deal
with, and he did not conceal his opinions about any
							man.
							His
clients, in whose interests he never spared himself,
appreciated that. He had passed away in the fullness
of his years and the sympathy of the Court went to
the members of his family in their bereavement. Mr R. O'Hanrahan, B.L., as
senior member of the Leinster Bar present, said that
the late Mr. Maffett was a practitioner in that
Court long before they came here. They had heard of
him as a man of character and ability who did the
best for his clients without fear or favour. Mr Hugh O'Donnell, Solr., as
senior member of the Co. Carlow Solicitors Bar
Association present, and Mr J.D. Fitzgerald, County
Register, also joined in the tributes.
Although it is not stated in Mr Maffet's
obituary I always thought he was a member of a long
established legal family firm in Carlow as I have
seen Carlow documents signed by a Mr Maffett,
Solicitor, dating back to the 1830s
