Incident at
Bolgers Pub.

Source: Graigue Past & Present

Martin O’Neill of 98 Street, Graiguecullen was having a drink in Bolgers Pub, Browne Street, when in came a British Auxiliary with a lovely “45” sticking out of his pocket.  Martin was planning how he was going to get the gun. Martin took out a shining bicycle wrench and asked him to “strike them up” and relieved him of his gun and ammunition.

In June 1921, Martin and “Daddy” Hogan lay in wait for an Army truck at Carlow Railway Station. When the driver was about to get off they hopped beside him, put a gun to his ribs and told him to drive on, They met the R.I.C. Patrol at St. Leo’s but they carried on up the Old Park Road. There the lads put a bullet through the petrol tank and set the lorry on fire.

Martin and “Daddy” crossed over by Strawhall down to the Lock and went for a swim. The Tans arrived. “Daddy” lay where he was and bluffed them. Martin swam across to Knockbeg College, followed by a hail of bullets. He went through Derrymoyle to Whitneys Cottage, got a bicycle and back to Killeshin. (Dec – 77)
