Furious Driving

The Jurors for our most Sovereign Lady Victoria the Queen, upon their Oath, present that John Holbrooke of Leany late Servant to Pillworth Whelan and the house of Robert Durden on the 4th of January in the eight year of the reign of our most Sovereign Lady Victoria the Queen, with force and arms, at Ballon in the County of Carlow in and through the Queen's common Highway there, unlawfully, furiously, and at a rapid pace, did drive and ride  a certain two wheel, one horse  carriage by reason whereof the liege subjects of our most Sovereign Lady Victoria the Queen on the day and year aforesaid at Ballon, could not go, return, pass, re-pass and labour in and through the Queen's common Highway there without great hazard and danger of being maimed by the said horse and carriage and losing their lives, to the great damage, terror, and common nuisance of all liege subjects of our most Sovereign Lady Victoria the Queen in, by and through the said Queen's common Highway at Ballon there going, returning, passing and re-passing and labouring to the evil example of all others in the like case offending, and against the peace of our most Sovereign Lady Victoria the Queen, and her Laws, her Crown, and Dignity.  ~~~ Confined till further notice ~~~~

Abandon Infant Child

The Jurors for our most Sovereign Lady Victoria the Queen, upon their Oath, do say and present, that Ellen McEnery alias Julia Keyford, alias Conors, alias Thompkins, a vagabond woman of rustic hair, narrow face, pinity long nose, light body of 5 foot 3 inches in measure, bad mouth with no abode but late of the countryside on the Queen's Highway near Ballon Hill in the County of Carlow and now in the Jail of Carlow a prisoner.

Did on the 8th day of January in the eight year of the Reign of our most Sovereign Lady Victoria the Queen, with force and arms, at Ballon had in her care, custody and control, a certain female infant child, of tender age, and by reason of such tender age then and there utterly incapable of making known the natural wants, and of providing and procuring for the necessary attention, support and maintenance of the infant child, and that the said Ellen McEnery, alias Julia Keyford, alias Conors, alias Thompkins being of a most wicked, inhuman and cruel disposition.

Did secretly, wilfully, maliciously and unlawfully did leave, desert and abandon the said infant child on the Queen's Highway at Ballon and by such abandonment, did wickedly, knowingly and unlawfully expose the said infant to great and imminent danger of perishing for want of needful food and sustenance, and of due and proper care and attention, and through the inclemency of the weather, the infant is now in the God fearing and loving care, custody and house of Thomas Nowlan and his wife Mary of Ballon.

Ellen McEnry, alias Julia Keyford, alias Conors, alias Thompkins is judged in contempt of our said most Sovereign Lady Victoria the Queen and her Laws, and against the Peace of our said most Sovereign Lady Victoria the Queen, her Crown and her Dignity. (for Transportation as soon as it may be arranged so).

Brennans Stole Land 1845.

Dating from 1845, the following is account of Michael Cullen claiming that the four Brennans have taken his land.

The case was dismissed.

The Jurors of our Lady the Queen, upon their oath present that one Michael Cullen late of *Graigulleg in the County of Carlow, Yeoman, on the fourth day of September in the Eight year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lady Victoria, Queen, was seized in his demesne as of fee, of and in a certain Lands with the appurtenances there situate, and that John Brennan, William Brennan, Michael Brennan and Patrick Brennan all late of Graigulleg, Yeomen, while the said Michael Cullen was so seized of the said messuage with the appurtenances as aforesaid, and was peaceably possessed thereof into the said messuage with the appurtenances with force and arms, and with strong hand unlawfully did enter and the said Michael Cullen from the peaceable possession of said messuage with the appurtenances then and there, with force and arms, and with strong hand unlawfully and injuriously did expel and put out, and the said Michael Cullen from possession of the said messuage with the appurtenances and still doth keep out, against the peace of our said Lady the Queen her Crown and Dignity.

*Graigulleg = Graiguealug, a large townland of 446 acres.....but divided amongst the civil parishes of Nurney, Templepeter and Tullowmagimma.  It is located just west of the Fighting Cocks Cross Roads on the N 80, also west of the medieval (or earlier) Templepeter church ruins.
