The Poor Law Union is important to with respect to:
- civil registration of births, marriages, and deaths (1864 ->). In an index for vital records the union is the same as the Registration District
- Primary (Griffith's)Valuation
- getting an idea of the area in which an ancestor lived. Reading the various poor law union records, including the Board of Guardians Minute Books will give one an idea of the sociological conditions.
