QUERY:

Searching for information on my great-grandparents who emigrated from Cookstown, County Tyrone to America in 1863. My great-grandmother, Mary Jane Yarrow, was born in Cookstown March 18, 1834. She married my great-grandfather, William T. Dougan there. He was born in Scotland May 23, 1833 and moved to Cookstown as a child. Six children were born in Cookstown before the family left for USA: William J./b. 1854; Kennedy/b. January 1856; Martha/b. 1858; Thompson/b. about 1860; Julia/born July 31, 1861; and Thomas W./born June 19, 1863. William was a flour miller in Missouri, USA and I believe that was his profession in Cookstown. Mary Jane's father was named John Yarrow. The family was Protestant. Have been able to find them on ship manifests.

Any information would be greatly appreciated and will gladly share information.

We have recently found distant relatives in America and have decided to trace our name back as far as possible. My father has in his possession a copy of the birth certificate of his grandfather whose name was John Kelly Dorragh born 1872 and registered in Castlederg, I think, will find out for proper and e-mail again at a later stage. Although birth certificate shows father as Robert Dorragh and mother as Maria Kelly we are at the at a loss if he was only child as this is the only information we have. We presume that there must have been other brothers, otherwise the name would not have got to America.

Any information you can give me would be most grateful even if it is just that where do we go from here.

Take care

COLIN JAMES DORAGH

P.S. we do not know how the name changed to the above spelling but that is for another day.

The marriage produced many children: Mary (b. 24 Feb 1865), Kate Agnes (b. 15 Aug 1866), John (b. June 1870), Margaret (b. 13 Jul 1875), Helen (b. unknown), Madeline (b. I am just beginning my search for information on my father's family, one name found is Blaney. Here is what I have been told by my father's sister Joseph Blaney married to a Sarah (unknown maiden name) They had at least one child (my great grandmother) Catharine Blaney unknown if first name is spelled correctly.

Joseph, Sarah and Catharine immigrated to US (NY first then Camden NJ) in 1891. Sarah was 11 years old indicating she would have been born in 1880 In County Tyrone. She told her children the trip took 6 weeks by ship. Reportedly Joseph Blaney was Protestant, Sarah was catholic, this supposedly prompted the immigration.

Catharine married William McMenamin in the US, possibly in Camden NJ, unknown when Catharine & William had multiple children Jean DOB ?    Sarah DOB?    Mary DOB?    John DOB?    Joseph DOB?   James (my father & last child) 11/7/1917 in Camden.

SURNAME: Aikens

I have been trying to search family history for William David Aikens b. approx. 1797 Ireland m. Margret b. approx. 1908 Ireland. They married 13 June 1829 Tyrone Co., Ireland by Rev. Adams. I don't know where Wm. David died but Margret died 15 July 1892 Corsica, Jefferson Co., PA. This marriage date was taken from Father's Pension application when son William died in the war between the states. Children: William died 9 June 1863 near Potomic River, Virginia battle of Chancellorville. Mary Katherine b. 22 June 1829 PA, m. 29 Aug 1848 Henry Crooks and d. 4 Feb 1907 and is buried in S. Dakota. As you can see the marriage date and birth of Mary Katherine are only nine days apart. I understand that often people did not officially marry but lived as husband and wife sometimes many years before they could afford the marriage rites. Makes me wonder if perhaps they married right before they sailed to USA to simplify things.  I have been unable to locate ships lists for that time frame and I assume Belfast was the port of departure. Any thoughts or assistance on this sojourn would be most appreciated. Carol

Apparently the store is still operated by son of my gr-grandfather's brother. William had two younger brothers, David and John, and a sister Mary. Both David and Mary died unmarried, while John died as a child when a horse kicked him. Hi,

My family had three letters written from Claudy(Clady), around 1840, and sent  to my gggrandfather, Patrick Mullen, in America, first in New Orleans, then NY, and last, Boston, Mass. One letter is from his father James, and the other two from some undetermined person. Two other letters were written by Patrick's brother Tobias, from the seminary at Maynooth. Tobias later emigrated to America, and became the bishop of Erie, Pennsylvania. Patrick apparently had two other brothers, James and Robert, in America at the same  time. Patrick's mother was Mary(Travers) Mullen, who died June 14, 1839, and  was interred in Abrucy(?) yard, on the 16th. The parish priest was Fr. Denis Mc Devett, and was suceeded by Fr. Paul Bradley. It has been determined that this is Urney, Clady Parish. Names of some of the local people are mentioned,  as well as where they were or were going. Any help is welcome.

Re: MULHOLLANDS from Cookstown, Co. Tyrone

My great-grandparents were JOSEPH and ELIZABETH MULHOLLAND and they had a farm in the parish of Kildress, Cookstown. They married in July 1872 and had  6 children - Rachel, Robert, Lizzie, James, Meggie and Mary Ann. Elizabeth's  father was WILLIAM MULHOLLAND who was also a farmer - it's possible that Elizabeth and Joseph were cousins. Joseph's father was also Joseph Mulholland and a farmer. Can anyone help with further information?

There was also a MOSES MULHOLLAND who was born in Cookstown in 1883 and who emigrated to Canada in 1906. He became Deputy Chief of Police in Toronto and  I have a photocopy of part of a newspaper cutting of when he retired -  probably in 1954. It is by a Telegram Staff Reporter. My g-g-grandfather was JAMES MCSORLEY, born in County Tyrone on June 1813 (based on tombstone inscription).  Likely location in Ireland:  Moneygar Townlands, parish of Kilskeery, although this is not confirmed.

Family oral history is that James and (some of) brothers emigrated to North America through Philadelphia.  James is the only brother known (at this time) to have subsequently emigrated to Canada.

Based on daughter CATHERINE's baptism record, have placed James in Ontario, Canada in 1842, married to a MATILDA HART, also born in Ireland (c. 1825).

Catherine (b. October 1842) was James & Matilda's oldest daughter; JAMES (b. June 1844) was James & Matilda's oldest son.

Have also placed the following adult McSorleys in the same location during the same time period:  HUGH, JOHN (possibly 2-3 Johns), MARY, CATHERINE and SARAH.  Think it possible that JAMES and MARY may be siblings, but family relationship among other named McSorleys not substantiated.

MARY MCSORLEY was married to an ANTHONY HIGGINS, with one daughter born in Ireland prior to emigrating:  MARY, c. 1840.  JOHN, b. 1843 in Ontario, was Mary & Anthony's oldest son.

Common boys' names in family:  JAMES, THOMAS, WILLIAM, EDWARD, CHARLES.

Common girls' names in family:  CATHERINE, MARY, ELLEN, MARGARET (MARGUERITE?).

Searching for James' siblings and parents, but any other assistance/information on any of these names is welcome.

Thank you.

Query:

WALLACE - Samuel Wallace, b. probably before 1800, came from somewhere in Co Down, to farm at Mullineal in Co Tyrone in the 1830-40's.  He brought his family:

Mary, Robt, Samuel, Isabella, Eliza and one other daughter.  She married ?Anderson and emigrated.

Does anyone have an Anderson marrying a Wallace? or have any idea how I can trace this family back to Co Down without a townland?  All the children were born there according to the census.
