Doing Research at the Family History Centers

The place to look at microfilm of records from Ireland (unless you live or visit Ireland) is at your closest Family History Center. These are small libraries run by the Mormon Church and manned by volunteers. You can order film from areas such as Tipperary and have the film sent to the library for about $3.50 per film. Here is the url to find a library near you: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHC/frameset_fhc.asp

To search the Family History Library for available film titles check out the Library Catalog. http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp

In the box for PLACE type: Tipperary (or wherever). You can leave the second box blank. You will get a list of places to choose from. Choose the correct match for the place you are looking for. Then you can look through the titles to see if something might be of interest. The choices will vary from place to place depending on what the Mormons were able to access.

You can also do a Surname Search to see if there is a book available that might be helpful. Not every book is on microfilm and available to FHC's. If there is no microfilm number it cannot be ordered.

It is a good idea to call ahead and verify times of operation. These centers are a vital resource for those of us who do not live in Ireland.
