| Quinn Family Research by: Fiona Jones April 2, 2008, updated April 28, 2008. ++++++++++++++ | According too Edward MacLysaght, a former Chief Herald of Ireland, the surname Quinn is derived from the personal name Conn, (Conn of the Hundred Battles). In Irish it is O'Cuinn. There are five distinct Septs in Ireland that bear the name; they are in Antrim, Clare, Longford, Tyrone and Derry where the surname is MacQuinn. Many place names also bear the mark of the Quinn, Inchiquin and Ballyquin in Ireland, Rue O'Quinn in Bordeaux, France and Quinnpool Road in downtown Halifax, Nova Scotia (New Scotland), Canada. | | No information is known about the origins of the Quinn family other than that were strong geographical connections to Aughrim, Aughnaloopy, Drumcro, and Leitrim townlands. These townlands border each other and the family may have had land that traversed more than one townland. There is circumstantial evidence such as the naming pattern of the children that would indicate that the mother was from the Hamilton family. Interestingly this branch of the Hamilton family were of the Roman Catholic faith which is unusual in Kilkeel. | 1 Unk. Quinn b: Abt. 1770 in Co. Down, N. Ireland. + Poss. Hamilton b: Abt. 1780 m: bef. 1810 in Co. Down, N. Ireland. | | The name “HAMILTON” was originally given by a direct descendant of this family Vincent “Vincey” Quinn from Kilkeel - no formal documentation has yet been found but increasing evidence is emerging to indicate that this may well be correct. There is a link however between the name HAMILTON and “Springfield Villa” which was the residence of Thomas Quinn on the 1911 census for Aughnaloopy. In 1856 "Springfield Villa" was the residence of James Hamilton Esq. and any possible link between these families is the subject of current research. It was originally assumed that the Hamiltons were Presbyterian, however research by Sheila Philips on Margaret Hamilton (b. abt. 1805 - the daughter of James Hamilton from Augnaloopy) reveals that there was indeed a branch of the Hamilton family living in the area that was of the Catholic faith. Margaret had a sister Ann who became a nun at the Poor Clare Convent in Newry. The fact that the Quinns and the Hamiltons were both Roman Catholic families adds credence to the possibility of inter-marriage between the two families. | Springfield Villa Kilkeel 29: 29/16 farm, in Drumcro townland, 2km NW of Kilkeel town; residence of James Hamilton Esq. & Rev. George Nesbitt in 1856 SCD Source: Sheila Phillips | Thomas, Henry, James, Mark, Edward, Ann, Richard, Patrick and John Henry are not yet verified as brothers of but certainly they are related and were living around the townlands of Drumcro, Leitrim and Aughnaloopy during the same time period. Henry, Thomas, James, John and Mary are all confirmed as siblings (and as children of James) from the gravestone inscription at Massforth Church in Kilkeel. A visit to churchyard to find the other headstones may assist in confirming a relationship between these people. | 2 Thomas Quinn b: abt. 1790 around the Drumcro area of Kilkeel, Co. Down, N. Ireland. d: aft. 1856 m. 30 Nov 1830 in Kilkeel, Co. Down, N. Ireland. + Margaret Donaldson b: abt. 1800. Of Scottish-Irish descent. d: Aft. 1856 m: abt. 1820 in Kilkeel, Co. Down, N. Ireland.
An IGI record lists the marriage as having taken place in Newry: THOMAS QUINN Spouse: MARGARET DONALDSON Marriage: 30 NOV 1830 Newry, Down, Ireland Source Information: Batch Number: 7234608 Sheet: 24 Source Call No.: 0822605 Type: Film Margaret is a member of the Donaldson family of bakers from Kilkeel. The Donaldson family was Presbyterian but Thomas and Margaret’s children were all reared as Catholics. | 3 Henry Quinn b: 1822 in Drumcro, Kilkeel, Co. Down, N. Ireland. d: Bet. 1822 - 1843 in Drumcro, Kilkeel, Co. Down, N. Ireland. (May be an error in DOB – before marriage of parents). There are details on Henry Quinn son of Thomas and Margaret b. Dec 25, 1843 so if this is a previous child, it is unlikely that he survived childhood.
| 3 Jane Quinn b: 1826 in Drumcro, Kilkeel, Co. Down, N. Ireland. d: in California, USA. Residence: 1880 Centerville, Alameda, California, United States. + John Lloyd b: 1818 in Ireland d: in California, USA. m: abt. 1850 in Kilkeel, Co. Down, N. Ireland. Note - Jane Quinn from Kilkeel was the named sponsor at the baptism of John , son of John & Ann McCartan 11 Apr 1858 at Lower Mourne Catholic Church and also at the baptism of Mary, daughter of Michael White & Rose McCarten 11 Aug 1871 at Lower Mourne Catholic Catholic Church (PR). This further establishes links between the Quinn and the McCartans of Moneydarragh, however it couldn’t be Jane, daughter of Thomas as she would have been married prior to these baptisms and therefore would be listed as Jane Lloyd. Possible emigration: http://content.ancestry.com/iexec/?htx=View&r=an&dbid=7488&iid=NYM237_293-0057&fn=Jane&ln=Lloyd&st=r&ssrc=&pid=6221356 Jane and John Lloyd are listed on the 1880 US Federal census living in Centerville, Alameda, California. John is listed as a laborer and Jane is keeping house. No children are listed. http://content.ancestry.com/iexec/?htx=View&r=an&dbid=6742&iid=CAT9_62-0621&fn=John&ln=Lloyd&st=r&ssrc=&pid=43479656
| 3 Margaret Quinn b: 1830 in Drumcro, Kilkeel, Co. Down, N. Ireland. Nothing is known about Margaret, even whether she survived through childhood. There are several possible marriage records for a Margaret Quinn: Henry Quinn bef. 1851, Arthur Cunningham Feb. 7, 1855, Peter Kinney from Ballymadeerfy Feb 4, 1862, Samuel Quinn bef. 1858, Loughlin Greenan from Letalian, Kilcoo May 13, 1868 or Patrick Quinn from "Springfield", Aughnaloopy bef. 1863.
The marriage to Samuel Quinn is an unlikely one as this couple’s first child was born in Kilkeel Workhouse and this doesn’t seem to “fit” with what is know of the family’s financial standing. The marriage to Patrick Quinn from Aughnaloopy would also seem unlikely as Margaret and Patrick would have been first cousins. | 3 Matilda Quinn b: 1834 in Drumcro, Kilkeel, Co. Down, N. Ireland. d: 06 Sep 1911 at Longstone, Kilkeel, Co. Down, N. Ireland. + Terence McCartan b: abt. 1845 at Longstone, Kilkeel, Co. Down, N. Ireland. d: 01 Apr 1896 at Longstone, Kilkeel, Co. Down, N. Ireland. m: 05 Dec 1866 in Kilkeel, Co. Down, N. Ireland. Miss Matilda Quinn, Kilkeel married Terence McCartan of Longstone 5 Dec 1866, witnesses were Henry Quinn & Mary Sloan. Matilda had a brother Henry Quinn born Dec 25, 1843 who later married Kitty Robinson – it is likely that the witness mentioned here was Henry her brother. 1901 Census entry for Moneydarragh Beg, Kilkeel: 57 | Matilda | McCartin | Head | RC | 55 | F | Housekeeper | W | | Thomas | McCartin | Son | RC | 25 | M | Farmers Son | S | | Edward | McCartin | Son | RC | 23 | M | Stone Cutter | S | | Sarah | McCartin | Dau | RC | 20 | F | Seamstress | S | | Maggie | McCartin | Dau | RC | 16 | F | Seamstress | S | | Henry | McCartin | Son | RC | 18 | M | Stone Cutter | S |

| “Mr. Quinn was born in Ireland, December 25, 1843, son of Thomas and Margaret (Donaldson) Quinn, the latter of Scotch descent. His father was a farmer in Ireland. Harry lived at home until sixteen years of age, securing a common-school education and assisting in the farm work. At that early age he started out in life for himself and immigrated to Australia. On his arrival there he first went to the mines of the Melbourne colony and subsequently to the mining districts of Adelaide colony. There was, however, little in mining for him, and he gave it up and turned his attention to the sheep industry. Securing a position on a large sheep ranch as a common laborer, he began zealously to learn the various details of the business, being thus engaged for eight years. He came to California in 1868, traveled through the northern part of the State and Nevada, and afterward came to the Tule River, in Tulare County. Being much pleased with the country, he decided to locate here. He hired out as manager of sheep ranches until 1872, when he purchased of A. Leitch, of Stockton, a one-half interest in his band of 7,000 sheep, grazing at that time being free throughout the valley.” | | Mildred Quinn Richardson - the youngest daughter of Henry and Katie Quinn Source Beth Richardson | Emigrated 1859 from Ireland to Australia Emigrated abt. 1868 from Australia to California http://books.google.com/books?id=qLDP6FjeCp0C&pg=PA29&dq=quinn+kilkeel+australia#PPA29,M1 “In 1886 Mr. Quinn took an extended tour through the East, passing through twenty-two states. I come from Kilkeel in County Down. I sail from my home in Ireland, the seventh son of the seventh son. I sailed from Newcastle in '63. Round Tierra del Fuego to the Melbourne quay, where stars and stripes did catch my eye. I said "That's me flag boys," Australia good-bye I'm going to the Golden State Make me my fortune before it's too late Land of plenty, or so they say California, I'm on my way. Across the Pacific our sails did fly As we trained our eyes on the eastern sky and sighted a country my dreams had belied "Jesus, Mary and Joseph!” I cried. So I toiled and toughened and made my way and built my fortune and family. From Rag Gulch it stretches out far and wide on up to Val Verde on the eastern side. I'm going to the Golden State Make me my fortune before it's too late Land of plenty, or so they say California, I'm on my way. A hundred years later my great grandson borne of the valley and raised in the sun, did travel to Ireland to the County Down and married a lassie in Belfast town. A great grand-daughter of Maeve the Queen, and the seventh son of the San Joaquin. Two daughters begotten - so proud and strong and gave them the power to carry on. I'm going to the Golden State Make me my fortune before it's too late Land of plenty, or so they say California, I'm on my way. http://www.thefarallons.com/music-4.html | The Henry Quinn Story http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nirdow2/quinnstory.htm

This provides further evidence that would connect James Quinn with Thomas Quinn who married Margaret Donaldson. Freeman's Journal and Daily Commercial Advertiser (Dublin, Ireland), Tuesday, June 14, 1853, entitled “Catholics of Ireland”, where James is mentioned – there was a gathering of the major Catholics in Ireland in protest against ‘invasion of nunneries’. This is in contradiction to what Deidre McEvoy had been told previously so perhaps the parents his parents were Presbyterian or else he converted. At least 2 of his daughters married prominent Catholics and possibly another daughter (Rose) married James Sloane (Catholic). Although a descendent of Rose said that family legend had it that Rose was protestant and that her father may have been a presbyterian minister called George Hamilton. As you know, family legends are not always accurate but this requires further investigation. Another family legend refers to Springfield Villa as a “Bishops House”. A study of the revaluations of Aughnaloopy by Sheila Philips reveals that on two occasions members of the clergy were staying at the house (…need to add details,,,,,,,,,,,,,,..) and it is suspected that this is where the idea of a “Bishops House” came from. | 3 Nicholas Quinn b: 1830 in Kilkeel. d: 29 Jul 1903 in Waimate, Mikikihi, Canterbury, New Zealand. + Mary Cunningham b: 1832 in Kilkeel, Co. Birth: no record. Immigration: No record. Abt 1859 according to info. given on death cert. Definitely prior to 1863 according to land registry. It appears that William arrived in New Zealand circa 1859. He will not have arrived for the Otago gold rush which didn't start until the early 1860s, nor the Westland gold rush which started towards the mid 1860s. The 1859 date for immigration is interesting. Note the following: Immigration to Australia - may have gone from Australia to NZ. Family Name First Name Age Month Year Ship Port Fiche Page QUINN NICHOLAS 28 JUL 1859 TUDOR B 165 003 QUINN JAS 26 JUL 1859 TUDOR B 165 004 It would be interesting to see the original manifest to determine if the transcription is accurate. I would have expected Nicholas and William to travel together. (There are also references to James Quinn in New Zealand that are unsettled). The Crown grant ("Queen to William QUINN”) of section 6548 indicates that William QUINN had it from 24 Dec 1863. Section 11058 appears in deeds with 6548 and it appears that he had it from 07 Jan 1867. The date of the grant is actually 04 Nov 1871 for 180 acres in total which is later than those dates so am wondering if he at first had an agricultural lease or simply squatted on the land at first. I don't know what the situation was regarding land in South Canterbury in 1863. (Source: Peter Dillon). Update Rural Section 6548 Went to LINZ yesterday for an hour before I went to work - there were a few remortgagings but I also looked at 9 W 238 which concerns the will of William QUINN (which is repeated - we already have this from Archives NZ) and the land concerned in his estate. As well as the land mentioned in my previous email he also had some plots at Makikihi township when he died. I had a quick look at the land registers concerning those and he actually had a couple more at Makikihi than were listed re his estate but he must have sold them by then. The stuff about 4 acres being excepted from the total acreage of lands - that was the bit that was set aside for the railway in the memorial of registration # 46344 (Source: Peter Dillon). William Quinn husband of Catharine died 1 July 1914 aged 80 years at his residence 'Annalong' Makikihi. |
