In the News

We've uncovered some embarrassing ancestors in the not-too-distant past. Some horse thieves, and some people killed on Saturday nights. One of my relatives, unfortunately, was even in the newspaper business.

National and local newspapers provide a wealth of information to genealogists.  Those searching for their County Down roots are especially lucky to have the archives of several quality newspapers at their disposal as well as some on-line editions.  In addition, we have just launched our own

where you can read and post newspaper clippings that relate to County Down.


The Mourne Observer

My own personal favorite!  The Mourne Observer takes a special interest in articles of local history and each week publish obituaries and items from the news of 20 years ago.

The Newry Democrat

Includes a useful online Local Notes section.

The Down Recorder

Publish obituaries and an interesting Country Diary section.

The Belfast Telegraph

Family Notices are published online daily.

The Irish Times

In addition to the printed edition the Irish Times run a site with historical information on each county, with census records, gravestone inscriptions and other genealogical data.
