Letters to America

Emigration Immigration Article Letters from America Letters to America Famous Folk Passport Applications DOWN Canadians Border Crossings

Rose Hoover has very kindly donated a letter dated 13 March 1916 from the Greer family of 159, Donegall Road, Belfast to their niece Elizabeth Dunlap Fadzen who was living at 3809 Foster Street, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA.  The letter tells of Mary Greer's loss of her son Arthur in WWI.

Rose has asked that if anyone has any input on the translation to please get in touch.

Elizabeth is the daughter of Sam Dunlap and Anne Hutchinson. Sam emigrated to America around 1893, following the advice of family members already in America.

A WORD Doc and PDF of the original letter are available.

In this next letter dated 25 May 1937, Mary Greer reports that she has now lost her second son, Samuel, due to illness.

Again a WORD Doc and a PDF of the original letter are included.

The third son, Herbie, wrote several letters to Lizzie during WW2 and talks about the bombs etc.

Thanks for sharing their story Rose.
