I am researching my CALLANAN/CALNAN family from County Cork. In particular, John CALLANAN/CALNAN, the son of Michael CALLANAN/CALNAN and Mary CASEY. John was born c1840. He arrived in Australia c1867 and married Catherine CARDIFF in Melbourne in 1873. My grandfather Michael John CALLANAN was born in 1874. John CALLANAN/CALNAN died in 1875 when my grandfather was only 1 year old, hence very little is known of John. John's death was registered by Cornelius SCANNELL who identified himself as "cousin of the deceased". Research of Cornelius SCANNELL showed that his parents were Michael SCANNELL and Anastasia CALLANAN. Any clue as to the CALLANAN/CALNAN, CASEY and/or SCANNELL families in Co. Cork would be greatly appreciated.

My great-grandfather, Timothy J. COADY, was born in Mallow, County Cork about 1846. Timothy married Ann DALY, also of County Cork. I don't know exactly when they came to the USA but in 1870 they were living in New York. They had two boys born in NY, John and James. Somewhere around 1875 they moved to St. Louis, MO. Their other children, Margaret, Mary (Molly), Elizabeth (Bessie), and William were born in MO. About that time they started spelling their last name as CODY. In 1888, Timothy was killed in an accident and Ann took her children and moved back to New York to live with family. They stayed there for about two years and then returned to St. Louis. John, James, William, and Elizabetht died young without marrying. Margaret and Mary survived and both married and had children.

I am searching for information on relatives last known to reside in Cork City.Patrick Hogan and wife "M." possibly Marie, were living at 195 Barrackton, Cork City from before 1923 and after 1927. Patrick was born in 1867 at Nenagh, Co. Tipperary. In 1927 he would have been around 60 and probably retired. I know of 3 children, Lilly/Lily, born Sept.1897, a daughter born about 1902 and a son, Thomas born about 1907. The last 2 ages are estimated from a wedding picture of Lilly Hogan and a Sgt. E. Fallon, who were married in Dec. 1917. By 1927 they had 2 sons & 2 daughters living and 2 daughters deceased and Lilly was living with her parents while her husband was in Iraq. I am hoping that there are "City Directories" in Cork Library similar to those in the U.S. If so, the Cork City Dir. should show when Patrick & family became residents of Cork and when they either removed from Cork or died there. You may have other means of solving my problem. Whatever assistance you may be able to provide will be greatly appreciated.Sincerely, Ed Phelps

Near East Coast of Ireland on a clear day you could see the Isle of Man sitting like a pearl out on Irish Sea. There was an immigration to Isle of Man as early as 950 A.D. at which time the Looney names are on tax books. They lived in various parts of Northern & Eastern Ireland and the old Looney home still stand, is owned by descendants, is 3 miles south of Ramsay and is known as the "Ballagilley Farm". Note; as in North Ireland the name is still called O'Looney. If you have any information on (or interest in) this family, please see our homepage at

My grandfather, Daniel Joseph McCarthy, emigrated to US @ 1905. He entered first at NYC then on to Boston area to be with relatives. He married in 1914 and raised his family in Brighton, Newton and Newton Center,Massachusetts. Both his parents are McCarthys, so, I'm researching the following two McCarthy lines: Timothy Dennis McCarthy, son of Charles McCarthy & wife, Mary O'Sullivan, was born 1821 at Coolboy, Caheragh, Cork,Ireland. Although there were other McCarthys in this area, he was the first of his line at Barnagowlane. This is not the village of same name but their homeplace which is located near Abbetstrowery and Skibbereen in Caheragh, Cork. Timothy Dennis McCarthy married Ainne' (Anne) Leonard and they inherited Barnagopwlane from her family who had resided there several generations. The Leonards all migrated to US or Reengaroa (sic) or died. Florence McCarthy, son of Timothy and Ainne', was born 12 Mar.1850 at Barnagowlane and died there 23 June 1935. He married Ellen McCarthy 12 Feb. 1881 at Killeenbeg, Skibbereen, Cork. She is the daughter of Cornelius McCarthy and wife, Mary Collins. Ellen was born 17 Feb. 1854 at Lissane and died 24 June 1940 at Barnagowlane. Cornelius was born @1822 at lissane, Drimoleague, Cork, Ireland and died 5 Jan. 1880 at Skibbereen. ( At least, I think this is his death date & place. Problem is this man was a shopkeeper while mine was a farmer.) Mary Collins was born @1826 Ireland. I am having difficulty accessing records. I am simultaneously to far back and not far enough back and am stuck in that black period of missing or destroyed records. Advice or assistance of any kind is sought and deeply appreciated. Thank you, Leila McCarthy Mayberry.

My grandparents are Daniel Joseph McCarthy, of Barnagowlane,Cork, and Catherine Theresa O'Connor. She emigrated as a 17 year old girl to Massachusetts where she married (1914)and raised her family. She is the daughter of Edward O'Connor and Elizabeth O'Mahoney who married 1885 in Co.Cork. Edward was born 1861,Co. Cork, and died 27 Jan.1925 at Kilmore, Bandon, Cork. Elizabeth O'Mahoney was born 1864 at Castletown, Co. Cork, and died 1938 at Kilmore, Bandon, Cork. Edward is the son of Dennis O'Connor and Catharine Kelleher. I know very little about them. Dennis may have died 1883 at a place something as Dunerabee ( record hard to decipher ) and his wife was still living. Edward and family are enumerated in 1901 census in S.E.Cork,Bandon,Brinny, Kilmore, Kinalmeaky, Bandon. ( Castletown is actually Castletown Kinneigh) Elizabeth is the daughter of Andrew O'Mahoney and Mary O'Leary who married @ 1860. He was born 1825 in Co.Cork and died there in 1917. She was born @ 1830 Co.Cork or Kerry and died 1905 in Co.Cork. I know very little about them. I will appreciate forever any advice or assistance in finding more of my family. Thank you. We are looking forward to a trip to Ireland in April to further our genealogy efforts. We will be visiting county Cork to look for traces of Mary O'Connor, (Mother- Mary O'Connor ne O'Connor and father Cornelius O'Connor) born April 30, 1878 in Knocknacurra Boherbue who married David Bohan, born April 27, 1878 also in County Cork. They immigrated to Illinois where they had 5 children (Catherine, Theresa <Block>, Molly <Moran>, Neil and Rita <LeFager>). I am a child of Catherine. On the McMahon side we have Thomas McMahon, born in Mendota Il. 1-5-1866 who was the son of Mathew and Susie Reardon both of whom were born in Ireland. We are researching Mathew but currently know little of him other than his residing in Mendota Illinois at the time of his son, Thomas' birth. Thomas married Josephine Donahue and they had 10 children: Ralph, Frank, George ("Lefty"), Earl, Mae <Kelly>, Kathryn <Roll>, Zeda, Patricia <Williams>, Marqueritte <Schreiner> + an unknown child. Any information, suggestions or inquiries gladly considered.

I am attempting to do a maternal line for my daughters. This has proved tremendously difficult as maiden names are not always listed. My name is Patricia Peters, my mother Katherine Burns, her mother Madeline Sullivan, her mother Catherine Moriarty. Here's where I get stuck. Catherine's mother was named Mary Ellen Hussey. She was born in (?) 1861 in County Cork. She married a man by the name of John Murphy. Her mother was named Ellen and her married name was Hussey, but I can find no immigration records for Mary Ellen Hussey or Mary Ellen Murphy, nor can I find any records(death or marriage) for her mother Ellen Hussey. Without them I can't continue back, as I don't know her maiden name. Any help would be appreciated.
