Persons Transported at the Clare Spring Assizes of
1849
The following list of persons were sentenced to be
transported at the Clare Assizes between the 28th of February
and 7th of March. The Limerick Reporter (I 2 March 1849), Clare
Journal (12 March 1849) and Limerick Chronicle (10 March 1849),
all provide the list of names, crimes and sentences. These were
checked against the names on the Transportation Register (1849,
Vol 9, Pages 10-11 and 21-24) which also gives details of crimes
and sentences as well as the ages of the prisoners. In some cases.
the Register has entries which indicate the ships in which the
convicts sailed into exile. Capital Letters + placed after the
numbers on the original list refer to these ships. The Prison
Register, MS3016, provides some information on cases of death,
or commutation of sentence. Many of the convicts pleaded guilty
as charges and since there are no records concerning their arrests,
or committal, it is impossible (in the absence of Australian
Records) to know exactly where they came from in Clare. References
in the Source column usually refer to information given in the
PLACE column. The place name referred to is more generally the
townland/parls-h where the crime occurred rather than the place
of residence of a convict. Convicts known to have been involved
in the same crime are grouped together.
