The
inscription under the picture reads:
United Irishmen get set to
march on Carlow town from Staplestown Road at dawn on 25th of May 1798.
Led by Michael Heydon they consisted of 500 Pikemen from Ballon,
Rathvilly, Rathoe, under Capt James Roche., 200 from Kelistown,
Chaplestown, Staplestown and Ballinacorrig under John Murphy., 275 from
Bennykerry, Rutland, Johnstown, Killerrig and Pollerton under Capt Nolan.,
2000 Kings Troops under Col. Mahon who commanded the 7th Dragoons, local
Yeomen Cavalry, and the much feared North Cork Militia. 640 were killed at
Potato Market and Tullow Street. There were no casualties on the Loyalist
side.
