Longford Militia Muster - 1824
Contributed by Ray Whittinger

In the county Militia there was supposed to be an Inspection Parade held four times a year in each of the Company areas. All Ranks were paid 1 shilling (5p) for attendance.  The Longford Militia was divided into; BallyMahon, Carrickglafs, Edgeworthstown, Foxhall, Longford and Newton Forbes, Lansboro, and Kenagh. The officers as with the Church of Ireland tended to be made up of the local Landlord class. The December 1832 muster list is an average one for the period; if you were to look at the period of the Napoleonic War around 1800 the size of the Militia is far greater. The earlier period acts as a far better Census of families. This however will not include those recruited into the Regular Army at the time.

Commanded by Lord Viscount Newcomer;

Ballymohan, Inspected October 1824; Capt. Robinson [Sergeants 2, Drummer  1, Ranks 48]
