CARTOGRAPHER – GEOGRAPHER – EXPLORER 1817 – 1887 JOHN PALLISER A NATIVE OF COUNTY WATERFORD, ASSISTED IN THE ORDNANCE SURVEY OF 1841 – 42 WAS APPOINTED HIGH SHERIFF IN 1844 AND ACTIVELY INVOLVED IN PLANNING RELIEF WORK DURING THE FAMINE. IN 1857 HE TRAVELLED TO CANADA ON A TWO-YEAR EXPEDITION TO EXPLORE THE VAST CANADIAN PRAIRIES. HIS TASK WAS TO ASSESS THE AGRICULTURAL POTENTIAL OF WESTERN CANADA AND TO EXPLORE TRANSPORTATION ROUTES THROUGH THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS TO THE PACIFIC OCEAN. FOR THIS WORK HE WAS AWARDED THE VICTORIA GOLD MEDAL OF THE ROYAL GEOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY AND ELECTED A FELLOW IN 1859. PALLISER'S EXPLORATIONS ARE REGARDED AS A SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTION TO THE DEVELOPMENT AND SETTLEMENT OF THE PROVINCE OF ALBERTA.
