Michael Coady kindly added the following information
regarding Fr. WILLIAM LONNERGAN the Parish Priest of Carrick

He was amongst a large number of people arbitrarily arrested
by the notorious High Sheriff of Tipperary, THOMAS JUDKIN
FITZGERALD on 22nd June 1798. Some were flogged for
"Confessions" Fr. LONNERGAN died suddenly at his home on
Easter Monday 2nd April 1804.

Some other notes that Michael added may help with the Census
Information and with the History of Carrick around the time
it was taken.

The unofficial 1799 Census of Carrick on Suir has been
called "the earliest complete census still extant for
anywhere in Ireland" It was compiled by WILL MORTON PITT,
(Military officer, demographer and author, originally of
Corfe Castle, Dorset) FRANCES WHITE (local merchant) and
PATRICK LYNCH (Gaelic scholar, author and schoolmaster).

Given ages need to be treated with caution and religion is
assumed to be Roman Catholic unless otherwise indicated.
Multiple occupancy of houses was common in what was in 1799
an overcrowded town, with the secondary families listed
under "Lodgers and Inmates". Carrick Mor is on the northern
side of the river and Carrick Beg on the southern side. The
1799 enumeration encompassed the town suburbs to the point
where continuous rows or clusters of houses ceased. Although
Parish boundaries in the case of both Carrick Mor and
Carrick Beg extended several miles into the surrounding
countryside the "Census is confined to the town itself and
lists nobody beyond its limits"

The manufacture of woollen cloth was the primary economic
activity which brought Carrick on Suir to a peak of
population and prosperity in the 18th Century. It was
already in decline in 1799. Many occupations (eg Scribler,
Shearman, Jenny Spinner, Weaver) were allied to the woollen
trade. Women's occupations were not usually listed - many
were Spinners. The census gives no linguistic information
but it is safe to assume that most people still spoke Gaelic
as the common vernacular in 1799. Trade with and migration
to Newfoundland and eastern Canada from the downriver port
of Waterford was also an important part of the local
economy until about 1840.

The original (unpublished and unindexed) manuscript is at
The British Library. A full facsimile copy is held at
Carrick on Suir Heritage centre, the complete census has
also been transferred to Database by Dick Denny and Michael
Coady. The census lists 10,907 people, (twice the present
population, and not including the military garrison) with
their ages, marital status, occupations and addresses.
