at Corofin House, Co. Clare.   A Water-colour Painter, some of his best known
works were - "The Arran Fisherman's Drowned Child" and "A Connaught Toilette".
In 1847 GLADSTONE appointed him Director of the National Gallery in London.
He stopped painting and the picture he had been working on "A Venetian Lady"
was never finished.  For his great work he was knighted in 1884 and received an
honorary degree of LL.D from Trinity College, Dublin.   He retired in 1894 and
lived in Kensington until his death in 1900.   He never married.  There are
three portraits of BURTON in the National Gallery of Ireland as well as some of
his own works in water-colours.)
