Headstones: DERRY, Glendermott Old Cemetery Ireland Genealogy Projects Archives http://www.rootsweb.com/~irlarchive/copyright.htm http://www.rootsweb.com/~irlarchive/derry/ Contributed by Alan Wilson Glendermott Old Cemetery The graveyard is known locally as the "Apprentice Boys' graveyard" because of the location here of the Mitchelburn and Murray tombs, who were not strictly speaking 'Apprentice Boys' but who did, nevertheless, play their parts during the Siege of Derry (1689). #1 Tomb of Colonel John MITCHELBURN The recently renovated tomb above is that of Colonel John Mitchelburn, the epitaph reads : Here lieth the body of Colonel John Mitchelburne, grandson of Sir Richard Mitchelburn of Broadhurst and Stanmore in the County of Sussex, a valiant soldier, faithful, pious, and charitable, expecting the resurrection of the just. He was Commander in Chief at the late memorable Siege of Londonderry, in 1689, in defence of the protestant interest, in the first year of the reign of King William of Blessed Memory, He had many thanks from the king for that eminent service, and deceased the first day of October, in the Year of Our Lord, One Thousand Seven Hundred and Twenty-one, an in the 76th year of his age. #2 Murray In Memory of Colonel Adam Murray of Ling in this county who during the ever memorable siege of Derry A.D. 1688 led to the relief of that City a troop of horse which he had raised for its defence and who eminently distinguished himself by his skill and bravery during that eventful struggle for civil and religious liberty This monument was erected over his grave by The Honourable The Irish Society A.D. 1837 #3 Murray Also the remains of Adam Murray M.D. Honourable East India Company's service, eldest son of Major Thomas Murray, 18th Royal Irish Reg. died 8th March 1868, aged 68 years.
