Londonderry Standard August 15, 1863
Londonderry Standard - Saturday 15 August 1863
"DEATH OF A BRAVE SOLDIER. - Mr. James Irwin, formerly of
Waterside, Londonderry, an orderly sergeant of the Second
Regiment of the New York State Militia (a regiment which was
embodied for three years), who was killed in the late battle
at Gettysburg on the 2nd July, had seen, perhaps, with his
regiment, as much real hard fighting as any soldier
connected with the U.S. army. He had never been out of
active service since the Second left New York (June, 1861);
never had a day's sickness during the entire period. He
fought in the Army of the Potomac, from Bull Run to
Gettysburg, in twenty separate engagements; he received but
one slight wound. His remains have been removed from the
vast graveyard at Gettysburg by his friends."
