Obituaries; Derry - Irwin, James August 15, 1863 *********************************************** Ireland Genealogy Projects Archives Derry Index Copyright ************************************************ File contributed by: Vondi Irwin irwinfamhistory@gmail.com June 3, 2025, 8:54 pm Londonderry Standard August 15, 1863 Londonderry Standard - Saturday 15 August 1863 "DEATH OF A BRAVE SOLDIER. - Mr. James Irwin, formerly of Waterside, Londonderry, an orderly sergeant of the Second Regiment of the New York State Militia (a regiment which was embodied for three years), who was killed in the late battle at Gettysburg on the 2nd July, had seen, perhaps, with his regiment, as much real hard fighting as any soldier connected with the U.S. army. He had never been out of active service since the Second left New York (June, 1861); never had a day's sickness during the entire period. He fought in the Army of the Potomac, from Bull Run to Gettysburg, in twenty separate engagements; he received but one slight wound. His remains have been removed from the vast graveyard at Gettysburg by his friends." Additional Comments: James Irwin is my great great grandfather.
