Mary Jane was born in Cloncarrish Armagh on 17 March 1853, one of four children to James Cooke, weaver and Martha Conn. James Cooke was the son of William Cooke and Susan. Mary Jane Cooke sailed on the Winsor Castle for Australia in 1876 ages 23 years. On arrival she lived at Kangaroo Point suburb of Brisbane in Queensland. She first lived with Alexander McKinstry and had three children to him. After his death she married Joseph Barrett from Devon England in 1885. Additional Comments: I do not know why Mary Jane left her home and family in Ireland, sailing more than halfway around the world by herself. Many thousands of young men and women looked to other countries to start a new life, Mary Jane being one of them.
