Death of Mrs Walker
On Friday last, at the ripe old age of 83 years, another of
the early pioneer settlers of the district passed away, in
the person of Mrs. Susan Walker, widow of the late Mr John
Walker. The deceased was born in County Carlow, Ireland,
and in 1860, with her husband; she emigrated to the Cape
of Good Hope, and lived there for some years. Thence they
came by the ship Maori, under command of Captain Ashby, to
New Zealand, taking up a bush section in the old Tuhimata
settlement, where the deceased lady has ever since
resided, Mr Walker's death occurring some ten years ago.
Mrs Walker was the mother of eight sons and five
daughters, most of whom are still living, and she also
leaves thirty seven grandchildren and thirteen great
grandchildren. The funeral took place at the Pukekohoe
East Cemetery on Saturday afternoon, when despite the
unfavourable weather a good number of residents and
friends assembled to pay their last respects to an old
friend. The Rev S Nixon officiated at the graveside, and
appropriately referred to the deceased's Christian
character as a loving mother and a good neighbour.

Pioneer Pukekohe Settler
Another pioneer settler, Mrs. Susan Walker, widow of the late
John Walker, died at Tuhimata, Pukekobe East, last week.
The deceased was born in County Carlaw, Ireland, 83 years
ago. In 1860 Mr. and Mrs. Walker emigrated to Gape Colony,
where they resided for four years. Thence they came by the
ship Maori, under command of Captain Ashby, to New
Zealand, taking up a bush section in the old Tuhimata
settlement, where they resided till their decease, Mr.
Walker having died some ten years ago. Mrs. Walker was the
mother of eight sons and five daughters, most of whom are
still living, with .37 grandchildren and 13
great-grandchildren. The funeral took place at the
Pukekohe East Cemetery on Saturday afternoon, when,
despite the unfavourable weather, a large gathering paid
the last respects. The Rev. S. Nixon officiated.
Does anyone know anything of the Bardon/Barden family who were
in Coolock, Co. Carlow in the 1800s. Susan Bardon/Barden
married John Walker and they came to NZ via South Africa.
