Willie Hosey
August
19 2015 On this day: Willie Hosey was born 100 years ago on the
Hosey homestead at Primrose Hill, Green Rd, Carlow on his day, August
19th. Willie attended the 'Old School' in College Street and later was
educated at Knockbeg College, Carlow where he was the best all round
athlete, He won a Leinster Junior football medal with the Carlow
football nursery in 1933 and in 1935 was selected on the Leinster
Colleges inter-provincial senior football team.
Willie married Mary
Flynn from Mayo and they have three children William (Canada), Marie
Olwill (Carlow) and Kyran (Australia) He worked in the drapery
business and had own shop in 138 Tullow St, where Éilis O'Neill had
her shop. He then worked in Wexford and Waterford for a number of
years before returning to Carlow to work in Haddens.
Willie boxed at
featherweight having been introduced to this in Knockbeg and together
with Fr. Nicholas Cullen, Graiguecullen Willie established the
Tinryland Boxing club in 1938 and was also an accomplished gymnast.
Willie has a unique record in the annals of the GAA - he holds a total
of thirteen SFC medals won in three counties and two provinces and
twelve of those were won in succession. He even outshines Christy Ring
who won twelve Cork SHC medals with the famed Glen Rovers. An
automatic choice was Willie on the Carlow senior team, with whom he
appeared in 1940, '41 and '42. In '43 he turned out in the Wexford
colours before transferring to Waterford where he won five further
county titles in a row with Dungarvan.
Willie was domiciled in the Co. Waterford town at that time. Willie
was named as one of the outstanding forwards on that historic day in
Athy when the Barrowsiders won their only Leinster crown on a score of
2-6 to 1-6. He was corner forward when Kerry beat Carlow 3-3 to 0-10
in the All-Ireland SFC semi-final.
Mention of Willie Hosey Snr brings to mind the achievements of his
eldest son Willie Junior who climbed to the position of Irish No1 in
the early 80's and who went on to become Irish National Squash
Champion a staggering 10 times and a World Squash Champion in the over
35's, 40's and 50's itself an incredible feat, no other player in the
World has achieved this.
Following his retirement Willie Snr became the manager at Carlow LTC
where he kept everybody on their toes with his banter and knowledge of
sport. Whether it be Squash, Badminton or Tennis Willie was always up
for a challenge.

Mary HOSEY (née Flynn) 26 Riverside, Carlow Town, Carlow
Mary Hosey (nee Flynn) 26 Riverside, Carlow and formerly of
Glenamaddy, Co. Galway, passed away peacefully on April 17th, 2016, at
her home, surrounded by her loving family. Beloved wife of the late
Willie, late of Tullow Street, Carlow, much loved mother of Marie
Olwill, Kyran and William Hosey, loving grandmother of Karyn , Fintan
, Sam and Barry Olwill, Emma and Natalie Hosey, and Great-grandmother
of Finn Olwill.
