Two 400 year old skeletons found

TWO skeletons which could date back almost 400 years have been found.

Town council workers in Carlow made the discovery while digging up a path outside Mulligan's pub at Graiguecullen on the outskirts of the town.

It is still unclear whether the partial remains which dated back to the Reformation - and which include the skulls and most of the upper and lower bodies - are male or female and what age they are.

The find was made last Thursday and the skeletons are a mere foot-and-a-half beneath the surface.

The area has been preserved while the gardai, National Museum and Department of Arts and Heritage have been notified.

It is thought the skeletons are linked to St Mary's graveyard, which is one of the town's oldest and located near the pub.
